iOpener - Heat Pad Adhesive Opening Tool for Phone, Laptop Repair

I bought the iFixit iOpener Kit because I was tired of risking damage to my devices with a heat gun or hair dryer when replacing screens or batteries. This kit has been a game-changer for DIY repairs. I use the kit to open Surface devices, works flawless. I find the included tools to be fairly helpful

I bought the iOpener kit in hopes that it would finally break through that pesky adhesive preventing me from replacing my Surface Book 2 base battery and needless to say; it worked, but I also can't say it's the end all be all for adhesive removal on hostilely engineered devices. The iOpener is a liquid filled bag that you microwave for 30 seconds at a time and use it's retained heat to soften adhesive in a more controlled manner than a heat gun. While a heat gun is certainly faster than the iOpener at distributing heat, it's very easy to overdo it and potentially damage something. Not the case with the iOpener, which doesn't get any more hot than you need and concentrates it's heat distribution evenly along one area. It definitely does what it's intended to. That said, the iOpener is really only as effective as the tools you pair it with and depending on the job, that can either be a cakewalk or an absolute headache. Unfortunately in the case of my Surface Book 2 job, it was the latter in large part to the additional tools that came with the kit. While there isn't anything inherently wrong with them, none of the tools are well suited to penetrating sunken and extremely tight gaps such as those on the Surface Book base. I ended up using two double edge razor blades since they were the the only things I presently had that could fit in the gaps and leverage them open enough to fit the picks and opening tool in. Even then, the tools I did use seem expendable and were pretty tore up after the job. I probably won't be using them again for other work. In conclusion, I would just get the iOpener itself and put the few bucks you save towards tools you know you'll actually need for your job. It's certainly not terrible value if you know you'll fully utilize what's in the kit, but for one and done type jobs, you're probably better off with the iOpener itself. It's worth a look.

The last time I had tried to fix a mobile device screen it didn't go so well because of the adhesive on the screen so I was worried about trying to fix my tablet on my own. Apple refused to do a screen replacement on my old iPad and wanted to charge basically full price to just replace it, and every repair shop was out of my budget so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I am very glad I chose this set of tools to get the job done! The heater bag is amazing! It made taking of the screen mostly painless, until the very end where I had to take off the part of my screen that was shattered but that was more on me. All the tools worked as intended and after some work and a lot of patience I was able to replace my iPad screen on my own without having to pay hundreds of dollars! Now I should mention I am no stranger to fiddling with devices, mostly computers and a phone here and there, I had a clear understanding of what I needed to do coming into this project and these set of tools helped me get the job done. Do your proper research on how to disassemble your device and see if these tools are the right ones you need. For me they were and I was very satisfied with the outcome.

The tools are all good quality and I use them in my kit except for the heating pad. I find that it doesn't retain heat well and doesn't direct it to where it needs to go. Personaly I am skilled enough to use a hot air station to do the same job and not burn what it is I'm trying to lift. The heating pad seams to lose one side and I can get it up but then I have to reheat it place it on the next section wait and then pull it up. With a hot air station I can just circle the entire aria heating it all at once removing it in one go at a quicker speed.

I think the iFixit iOpener is a handy tool for anyone who needs to open up electronic devices, particularly those with adhesive seals that are difficult to remove. The heat pad is easy to use and heats up in 30 seconds using my microwave, it makes opening these devices easy during my repairs. It's just the right size for most electronic devices, so you don't have to worry about heating up the wrong part of the device or overheating it. Additionally, the pad is reusable, so you can use it again and again without having to replace it. Another great thing about the iOpener is that it's non-toxic and doesn't have any weird smells, unlike some other heat pads selling on the market. Well, iFixIt have done it again, this is an AWESOME bit of kit, just everything works so well, the cost is prefect, also, I had a issue where the iopener leaked, iFixit replaced it without any fuss at all, just can not fault them. The kit is so easy to use, the added storage space for the screws and bits is amazing, the drivers stay in place brilliantlly and the magnet closing holds it all together great.
