Just a little over an inch. Probably 1 1/4".

Would it hurt anything to leave the blue protective plastic over the stainless steel for an outdoor installation?

I suppose you can, but not sure why you would leave on blue plastic. Mine is in garage, gets driven over, salt in winter and no rust or problem. Had it for about 4 years

For what it is, it's great!

Fit well. Legs are thin enough to bend if needed to adjust for a perfect fit. It's nothing glamorous, but really, it's a drain cover. You ain't gonna be LOOKING at this thing. Don't spend more than you need to on something like this!
