Has anyone else experienced the rod past the ball stop being too long and catching on the far side of the drain keeping the rod from full range?

Yes, I ran into this problem with Keeney Mfg pop-up drain assemblies that I recently purchased at Lowe's. (They come with their own pivot joints but I've sometimes raided them to replace old deteriorated joints in existing drains.) The part of the rod extending from the ball into the drain is too long (about 1-7/16") and stuck, scraping against the inside wall of the drain, when lowering the pop-up stopper. I was not strong enough to push the ball closer to the end of the rod - it is very tight. It did fit, however, in the older Keeney Mfg drain that I was replacing - apparently the inner diameter of that drain, which I purchased in 2015, is just a bit larger. So I was able to successfully use these replacement pivot joints, but only in my older drains, not in my newer Keeney drains.

So, kerry-plp, "manufacturer", is the exact diameter 9/16 or 5/8 inch? since you've responded with both answers, what do the design drawings say?
