Armies of the Italian-Turkish War: Conquest of Libya, 1911–1912 (Men-at-Arms)

Wars of empire...
In the early 1900's, a still newly-unified Italy sought colonial possessions and a sense of national purpose in Africa. In a preview of its fortunes during the Second World War, the Italian invasion of Turkish Libya turned out to be a far tougher proposition than planned. This nicely-written Osprey Men-at-Arms series book has a concise account.Author Gabriele Esposito provides some political and military background on the two combatants before getting into the actual campaign. The Italian Army won some initial victories on the coast, but the rugged interior was a whole different challenge. To force Turkey out of the war would require extraordinary measures. As always, the highlight of Men-at-Arms books are the photographs and artwork. This volume has lots of period photographs and modern illustrations and color plates. Well recommended to the student of modern Italy.

A little known war
Finally, a good place to start for those interested in the the little wars that led up to WW I. Concise, well illustrated, and most of all easy to read and understand. Osprey is the place to go, when a starting place is needed when delving into a new historical period.

Happy with my purchase
Book arrived on time and in perfect condition. Great insight into Italys offensive war against Turkeys possession of Libya and the Medditeran. Italy was the first nation to use aircraft in a combat role and the the stubborn resestance of the local Libyan population long after the war was officially over is covered. The book is well written and an easy read. Full of rare photos and the artists paintings of the soldiers uniforms are excellent. Well worth the money spent.
