Baking with Julia Nothing promises pleasure more readily than the words "freshly baked." And nothing says magnum opus as definitively as Baking with Julia, which offers the dedicated home cook, whether a novice or seasoned veteran, a unique distillation of the baker's art. Baking with Julia is not only a book full of glorious recipes but also one that continues Julia's teaching tradition. Here, basic techniques come alive and are made easily comprehensible in recipes that demonstrate the myriad ways of raising dough, glazing cakes, and decorating crusts. This is the resource you'll turn to again and again for all your baking needs. With Baking with Julia in your cookbook library, you can become a master baker. And there's no better time to be baking than now. Quality baking today is more varied, more exciting, and simply more authentic than ever before. Baking with Julia celebrates this tremendous range with enticing recipes that marry sophisticated European techniques to American tastes and ingredients. With creative flair, napoleons are layered with tropical fruits, pumpkin and cranberries are kneaded into bread doughs, and a tart is topped with sweet stewed onions. Along the way, step-by-step photographs demonstrate the basic building blocks of the pastry and bread baker's repertoire, and from this firm foundation fancy takes flight. Baking with Julia presents an extraordinary assemblage of talent, knowledge, and artistry from the new generation of bakers whose vision is so much a part of this book. The list of contributors reads like a Who's Who of today's master bakers, including Flo Braker, Steve Sullivan, Marcel Desaulniers, Nick Malgieri, Alice Medrich, Nancy Silverton, Martha Stewart, and a host of bright new talents such as Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid. With nearly two hundred recipes, and half as many pages of tantalizing full-color photographs, this incomparable kitchen companion goes far beyond what most cookbooks offer. More than fifty pages of illustrated reference sections define basic terms and techniques, and explain the hows and whys of batters and doughs to take you effortlessly through the essential techniques. If you've never made flaky pie crust, your first no-fail experience is at hand. If you've never baked bread, that most satisfying and sensual pleasure awaits the turn of a page. With recipes for breads, pastries, cookies, and cakes—from chocolate to cheesecake, from miniature gems to multi-tiered masterpieces—this cookbook is a total immersion experience in the wonder of home baking. Review: Here's Inspiration 4 the Kitchen! - A great book to go through the PBS series that is running right now. I'm cooking each and every one through the series so I have not only the changes made for the show but the ones that were put in the book. Yes, there are difference in some of the recipes. You would know that if you had the book and were following a long too. I want to form a Meta group of others that want to join me. Maybe I will just to get others who love to cook and bake together to go through something like this so we can all grow through the experience together. The book is well written, thorough, very informative, chock full of additional information you may think you don't need but trust me if you talk to a lot of foodies it's nice to understand what makes everyone thrilled beyond words when it comes to certain foods. The book is filled with photos of finished foods, foods in various stages of cooking / baking - literally everything is well thought out and delivered to the readers. The only thing missing is a plastic sleeve to cover pages one is actually cooking from to protect from food and oil stains. I absolutely love the book and find it a great addition to the many cookbooks I own. The only bad thing was the seller missed a rip in the jacket that I repaired. I'm just going to deal with it as is. I don't plan on selling original publication dates of my book collections but handing them to my daughter as many are worth thousands. This book will never make it there but it's a first edition and she may come to love it every bit a much as I do. Review: A Reliable Baking Book - I am skeptical of most of the cookbooks that are based on PBS TV cooking shows, plus some of Julia Child's early cookbooks had many recipes that were involved and difficult for the casual home cook to do. This book, however, is a reliable resource that you can depend on for baked goods in your home oven. The most important feature of this book is that all of the recipes are written by professional bakers (of whom there are some 2 dozen or so, some you will recognize, all are seasoned bakers from various commercial settings), and the recipes are scaled-down versions of reliable production recipes. The instructions are exemplary in their detail and completeness. All things considered, this is also an excellent learning tool for the beginner. When I need to learn something new (such as rugelach or naan), this is one of the first books I reach for. The first chapter has an extensive section on basic techniques and words that you do not usually get in even a good baking book. It has some basic recipes that must be mastered before you go on to the recipes in the rest of the book, like genoise or meringue. It also has chapters on bread (Daily; Artisanal, Flatbreads), breakfast goods and quick breads, cakes (Everyday, Showstoppers, Wedding Cake, Cookies), and pastries (Pies, Grand, Savory). It has a good selection of all the major categories you are likely to want to do at home.

Nostalgic, glorious and helping add to my fluffy layer.
In my pantheon of my kitchen gods and goddesses (Anthony Bourdain, Ina Garten, Jacques Pepin, Padma Lakshmi...) and one serious culinary crush (ahem...Andrew Zimmern) my ultimate kitchen deity is Julia Child. I grew up watching Julia on TV and she is a piece of my childhood and partially responsible for my love of food. Yes, I am a "live to eat" person and also a "love to cook" person. I am especially fond of baking and this book has been an excellent education by helping me hone beginner skills like making basic bread (my husband loves the White Loaf bread toasted in the morning) and has prompted me to try more difficult offerings like Danish Pastry. The directions are laid out clearly and concisely so frustration is minimal. The book is graced by Julia's charming storytelling and the bakers that are included in this book that worked along side her are some of the best in their field. A good read and a great baking "how to" manual.

Great book! Great service and delivery!
Delivered as expected and on time. Much appreciated. Note: I rate the service and quality of the product - not the content of the Book. However, as expected, the book has tremendous recipes and tips.

Classic Julia Child Baking Recipes Book
Received quickly and in good condition. I used it immediately to make a yogurt berry tart recipe Leslie Mackey make and it came out perfect. I recommend this book to all bakers out there, these recipes are created by the professional bakers that did them on Julia Child's baking show and even though they are old they all still work fine. The thing I like most is you watch the episodes that go with each recipe which gives you a great perspective on the techniques that were used to achieve the great results.

It's OK!
Hello, I'm Italian. I met Julia through the Nora Ephron film Julie & Julia. Although the Italian Cooking is the best in the world, (at least about it, please allow me a bit of national pride :D), I think Julia is an excellent teacher and its techniques are versatile and useful in many recipes, not just French. On YouTube, I have seen a few videos of "Baking with Julia" and I found them very interesting (especially the video of Martha Stewart Glorious Wedding Cake) I looked for the book on Amazon.it, but it cost 60 Euros (more than $ 63 !!!). :( I tried to order from Amazon.com, fearing exorbitant customs fees. Amazon.com has recognized my Amazon.it account (it's globalization, baby) I paid 10 euro about shipping (total 33 euro, about $ 35), I waited a bit more than a month. :) From the accompanying note, I see that the book has also made stops in Paris during his international transport (very amazing: a Julia's Soul desire?) I paid neither other taxes, neither customs fees nor IVA (Italian tax on the final cost of a product, Value Added Tax), nor else. Cup instead of grams and deciliters are not a problem, I have built a measuring cup with the bottom of a plastic bottle for water (1 american cup = 236 ml = 236 grams of water) Today I realize that now the book is also on sale on Amazon.it 32 € ! Anyway I'm happy with the purchase, for Amazon's service and for the book by Julia and Dorie. Now excuse me, I run into the kitchen to Baking something : D GNAM So, God bless the Julia Child's soul. I will come back to make orders on Amazon.com. It's a threat (I'm Joking!!! The threat is only for my money) :D Sono italiano. Ho conosciuto Julia tramite il film Julia&Julie.

Wonderful addition if you're a baker!
I just received my book recently and have already made several things from it. Yes, some recipes are a little time consuming but the results will knock your socks off--just follow the instructions exactly. I love to bake and this will be my baking Bible now. Wished there were more step-by-step photos but it still works for me. You have to be serious about baking in order to truly appreciate all the work involved in these recipes. Normally my results NEVER look like what you see in the book or on her TV show but I have been ecstatic as everything has come out exactly like I've seen on Julia's wonderful TV series from which this book is based. For best results, read the recipe thoroughly first...not just glance it over. Then write down all the ingredients you need and verify that you actually have them. Follow the recipe step-by-step and you will absolutely LOVE your results. I am so happy to have finally purchased this that I'm going to make something every weekend now. It's such a nice, big, heavy book that will be a wonderful addition to your other cookbooks. Bon appetit!

A Wonderful Baking Book
As a child, I watched Julia Child on TV during summer break. Some time after I bought this book, the Baking with Julia PBS series aired again on TV. I was happy to watch these excellent baking shows while having the book at hand. Julia asks her guest experts the kind of questions viewers might be asking - so helpful when you're trying a new recipe. The book contains beautiful photographs of the finished products and is very well written. These are not really beginner recipes but can be accomplished successfully with patience and practice. Julia was very generous about sharing her culinary knowledge with viewers/readers. Her presentations were not about everything being perfectly in place and never showing a mistake - it was about real cooking and her recipes are reliable. Julia Child should be considered a national treasure.
