Is this recommended for car rims? I've never used an airbrush before

Airbrushes are for painting small areas. I use mine to paint models. The reservoir on the airbrush doesn't hold enough paint to do large surfaces. I wouldn't think this is a good fit for what you want to do. Sorry.

I have been using a co2 cylinder instead of a compressor with an old testors airbrush. would the grex be compatible with the co2 cylinder?

Yes you would just need the proper hose and fittings

Grex tritium.tg3 vs gsi creos mr. procon boy wa trigger review?

I got the GSI Creos before I started using the Grex. I find the Grex easier to use during long spray sessions. Simply because it's bigger with the handle. The GSI Creos doesn't have it. Also, the Creos is a much smaller airbrush. It also has a much larger needle - .5 the Grex has a .3
