Crucial BX500 2TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-Inch Internal SSD, up to 540MB/s - CT2000BX500SSD1, Solid State Drive

Rarely is my experience with a new product exactly as advertised. This 2TB Crucial BX500 SSD drive is! First off, I have a PC setup slightly more complex than usual. I built this desktop computer myself several years ago, setting it up with a dual-boot config: Windows 10 64-bit on my main hard drive for application development work; Windows 7 32-bit on another, for compatibility with older music recording software and hardware interface. After all these years, I was concerned my two original 2TB Seagate drives would be reaching end-of-life. Plus, they were getting slower each year with more and more data on them. Now, this was my first replacement drive to see how it went--and my first SSD experience. I popped the new Crucial drive into an Icy Dock 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter case, installed it in an open drive bay, connecting it to an open Serial ATA slot in my motherboard with an extra SATA cable I had lying around (Note: the drive doesn't come with any cables), plugged it into an open SATA power connector connector, closed the case and powered up the PC. I then followed the Crucial online instructions downloading the Crucial Storage Executive drive info app and Acronis cloning app. I was pleased to see that the SSD drive was now recognized by Windows 10 and it was apparently functioning correctly. I then fired up the Acronis True Image app, selected my "C:" drive to clone and selecting "Manual" as a partition option and then, "As Is" instead of "Proportional", since both old and new drives are the same size. Cloning my Windows 10 boot drive took a good couple of hours and completed successfully. Now for the big test. I turned off the PC, opened the case again and disconnected the old boot drive and turned the PC back on. I now expected the usual option to boot from either the Windows 10 or Windows 7 drive. Instead, I got the ugly DOS message: "Reboot and select proper boot device." Uh oh... However, this was an easy fix. I rebooted and this time selected the option to open the BIOS software. From it's "BOOT" menu, I found my new Crucial SSD drive was listed with it's serial number beginning with "CTxxx...", instead of the Seagate drive "ST" prefix. It turned out my disconnecting the old primary Seagate drive had apparently confused the BIOS and caused it to move my empty DVD drive into the first boot position. I simply moved the new Crucial drive to that first position, saved the BIOS setting and rebooted again. This time I given the expected option to select my default Windows 10 drive, or my old Windows 7 music recording drive. The cloning process had NOT wiped my custom boot config! I selected the Windows 10 boot option to my new SSD drive and was AMAZED at how fast Windows 10 loaded--and then, how fast bulky programs like Microsoft Visual Studio now load. Awesome! I'm thrilled. I'm now ready to try replacing the other Seagate hard drive. Since this one has old, end-of-life Windows 7, we'll see how that goes. I'll let you know!

This is a very unscientific review, with comparisons that may not be useful to most people but long story short, this definitely appears to be a good value. I purchased this 2TB Crucial BX500 to replace a 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO on an old MacBook from 2007. This is not a good use of one's money and I'd advise normal people against it. I just really like this computer and I dual boot an old Mac OS for certain programs I use as well as Linux, and I just wanted to have a lot of storage for each operating system as they're housing some music/video libraries. Anyway. I was concerned that the Crucial would be noticeably slower than the Samsung, because it is so inexpensive. It starts up just as fast in MacOS (about 12 seconds) and Linux (i'm guessing it's about the same in Linux since the startup process is a little different and I went from Mint 19.2 to Mint 20 in the course of this upgrade so did not make an apples-to-apples comparison). Cloning the data was pretty slow admittedly. Cloning 400 GB of data took about 2 hours to the Samsung vs about 4 hours on the Crucial over USB 2.0. I probably won't have to do this clone again so I don't really care, but worth noting. If I'm not mistaken the Samsungs have more cache which speed up the transfer rate of the first 100 GB or so, and the Crucial being cheaper has less cache and only the first 50 GB or so get the faster transfer rate. Otherwise I haven't noticed any other speed differences in the tasks I use it for: web browsing, viewing and storing photos, music, video. If you really just want storage capacity, faster than HDD performance, better than HDD reliability (knock-on-wood) and you don't need the absolute fastest thing, this is a safe way to go. The Samsung is still wonderful and I will be handing it down to my dad for his 2012 MacBook Pro to hopefully get another year or two of use out of it.

Seller shipped right away, and since it was in California, where I also reside, it came a day earlier than projected. Transferred my old data to a backup, and then swapped out the SSD for the new one, and copied back. Up and running several hours later, with no real issues. So far, so good!

When it comes to SATA digital drives, especially Solid-State Drives (SSDs), the difference between pricey and cheap options often comes down to a few key factors that affect performance, durability, and overall quality. First up, NAND flash memory and controller play a crucial role. I used Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to get some results, but let it run for a while, and this drive can slow down quite a bit. It was only 34 MB per second! I saw a lot of videos and tutorials about problems with inexpensive SSDs that don’t have flash memory. I used this drive to create a backup startup disk for my Mac mini Pro. Honestly, I can’t tell a big difference between the startup time with the internal drive, which is incredibly fast, and this drive, which is supposed to be super slow. There are some performance differences, but they’re so minor for everyday use that I don’t notice them. Just to let you know, the maximum speed these drives can give is around 500 MB per second. After that, there are a lot of variables that can slow it down. I also had some problems where it would completely crash and fall off the desktop. My Mac mini took a long time to boot because it was repairing the disk. I was starting to get worried that it wouldn’t boot up, but it finally did, and I haven’t had any problems since. So far, I feel like I’ve beaten the odds! This drive has worked great for me.

Great hard drives. Work well

Have an older computer that's been in service a longgggg time. Its used as a general household computer, although its seen its fair share of games too. But, newer computers over time have displaced it as a primary use system. Over the years its had different versions of Windows on it - Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10, and various Windows beta builds so its seen a lot of Windows as has the hardware and the WD mechanical SATA drives in it. I built it years ago using an Asus Maximus VII Hero motherboard. Then Windows 11 came, and the other systems are fine with it but this very old system I also wanted to install Windows 11 Pro 23H2 on it. So I did a Rufus install USB thumb drive and did the bypass hardware requirements thing to get past any possible TMP missing stuff with the older Asus motherboard although all the other hardware and memory and CPU in the system meet the minimum hardware requirements for operation in Windows 11. Installed Windows 11 pro 23H2 fine and activated fine. But this system has always been, in relation to today's systems with SSD's, a slow booter taking a little over a minute to get to a stable desktop. Put the Crucial BX500 2TB in the system, Windows 11 saw the drive in disk management but not explorer. No problem, it just needed to be initialized so did that and created a simple volume then formatted and Windows 11 fully sees the drive and uses it fine. So used the free version of 'Disk Genius' to migrate My Windows 11 Pro 23H2 install to the new Crucial BX500 2TB. But, would the old bios (the very last version Asus made for this motherboard) on this old motherboard recognize it so it can be used as a Windows boot drive? So shut down, removed the many years old mechanical WD Sata 6GB/s drive, plug in the new SSD with Windows 11 on it, go into BIOS and its there so set it as the boot drive. System now boots to Windows 11 stable desktop in right at 10 seconds. I was impressed, I mean I never thought this old system would respond so well with this drive. I rebooted the system several times, timing the boot, just for the entertainment value of watching it boot into Windows so quickly. 😊 The whole OS is faster with the new SSD, everything is faster with it.

AMAZON LIED TO ME ABOUT REFUND! 10 MONTHS LATER I STILL HAVEN"T GOTTEN MY REFUND, with Amazon support always giving me the runaround on the issue and either lies saying they refunded it again, or sends me to some contact that doesn't exist for yet another dead end. I always build my RAID arrays with different brand drives with good purpose, as they are more likely to fail at different intervals. This is my first experience with a Crucial SSD, and at first it ran fine and was very fast, then suddenly after a week the RAID array containing this drive started to act sluggish, so badly that the computer in question would lag out and apps would crash sometimes crashing out the whole machine. This would happen at random intervals for about 20 minutes or so twice a day, then it became a few times a hour over the course of the week ruining productivity. It was quite a difficult time trying to find the culprit, as I considered this strange sputtering out with massive disc activity to be a possible rootkit or software problem, I never dreamed it was hardware.... but drive activity was 100% on the one drive in the array while the rest of the array was inactive. The problem was pretty clear. As soon as I failed this drive by the RAID software while it was in the middle of its next death cycle, the machine perked right back up and was responsive again like nothing happened. That confirms it! Bad drive! Amazon wouldn't give me an option to return for a swap, so I had to get a refund. I really just wanted another, but I noticed the price went up 50 bux since I purchased mine. No logical reason for me to spend more money to replace a problem with another problem, so I'll be settling for another brand. Thanks anyway, Crucial!

Kilkukrotnie z niewyjaśnionych przyczyn przestał być widoczny dla systemu. 3 razy już go formatowałem, gdyż nic się nie dało zrobić, a system wykrywał jako zupełnie nowy dysk... Teraz to już w ogóle. Podczas pracy komputer przestał działać, okazało się, że przez ten dysk. W systemie brak partycji z tym dyskiem. Gdy próbuję go dodać w systemie i przypisać literę, to nie ma takiej możliwości... Nie polecam, zmarnowany czas i pieniądze.

Product work very well, no problem setting it up.

Decent SSD, hasn't failed after 12mnths in a system running constantly, so no complaints from me..
