Very useful for ear training. Great for Rock and Metal players.
For rock/metal players, you do not need to pick up Major ii V I if you are already familiar with the major scale. I found this book invaluable for recontextualizing Phrygian Dominant, Minor, Locrian, and Altered Scales. This is my 2nd Jazz book from this series, my first was Chord Tone Soloing. With that said I would rate this book lower in difficulty from a technical standpoint, than Chord Tone Soloing, but better at internalizing different modes. This book will get your usage of Locrian and Altered Scales sounding very musical, which is a feat in and of itself. The last chapters of the book also cover key changes, mostly to Minor 3rd but this is an essential skill for rock players as well as Jazz. While there is actually a lot of theory behind it, the key to studying this book is to let your ears guide you and lock into each mode as it's presented.

Very good study material for advancing through intermediate level of jazz guitar
I have collected a lot of guitar instruction books over the years. I had this one quite a while before I actually started studying it. I was very surprised at how clear it was to understand. It made me realize where I had made costly efficiency mistakes, that is, not deeply ingraining arpeggios and their chord degrees. It quiet humbling that I’ve reached a pretty high level yet I need to go back and ingrain these lessons. The author calls it tough love, and its a lot tougher if you get way down the road and have to go back and get missed basics down. Anyway this is a very good book for the price, focusing on one of the essential progessions in music which is simple once properly understood but difficult without clear explaintion. I saw one criticism that the lines were not inspiring, but it’s not intended to be an advanced study but rather a method to ingrain fundamentals.

Excellent content and teaching.
I've played the guitar for over 40 years but could only manage certain skills. The CAGED system truly is opening up the entire guitar neck. I've purchased many other books and even taught from many other books. If it weren't against my nature I would through most of them away. If I could only purchase from I author Joseph Alexander would be the one. He truly knows how to teach, not just play. There is a big difference. Step by step he guides, methodically, through important scales, licks and exercises. If you can't learn from Joseph then put the guitar down and take up something else.Seriously, the best guitar instruction, in print form, I've ever seen. If I ever teach guitar again then his are the books I will use and recommend. Great job Joseph!

Guitar books should be written like this
Brilliant! Just like the previous one "Fundamental Changes in Jazz Guitar", this one is also very practical. What make this author's books different from others is their practicality. It's a real step-by-step method, each chapter is built on the previous one, one thing at a time. Most of the books just tell you what to play, but not how to play, or even if they tell you how or give you some practice tips, they won't give you a step by step guideline to walk you through the process (which I think is very important for self-taught guitarists),but this one (and the previous one) is the exception!

Easy to follow process!
I bought the Kindle version of this and a few other Fundamental Changes in Jazz Guitar books.I've been noodling around with the standard 12 bar blues pentatonic scale for years and when I decided to up my game, I went with Fundamental Changes.Joseph Alexander presents the concepts in small, easy to chew morsels. After finishing the first chapter, I felt like I'd opened a door to new possibilities with my guitar, and the chapters that followed did so in a logical, step-by-step progression.I've used some of his other books as well. His method is consistent among all of them. Highly recommended!

great practical examples and most important
I have several of J. Alexanders books, all very helpful, and this one really helped me clearify the concept of minor II-V progressions. The explanation of minor II-V progressions can be a confusing subject and almost every book on jazz theory will explain it differently. This one is very to the point, great practical examples and most important: it will guide you to hear the subtle nuances in the different chords.

The rate of information makes it easy to learn and remember.
The book is very well organized and always with the student in mind. The rate of information is perfect for the student. The examples, both visual and auditory are extremely helpful. After all the information is covered, additional comments are given about why this approach rather than that form might work better in this situation. Preferences are stated and why, but never as the only way. Mr Alexander's books are my reference library, which I consult on a regular basis.

Exactly what I was looking for
Minor II-V-I Mastery just arrived today, though I have been working through the major version on Kindle for a few weeks now.I highly recommend this book. Joseph Alexander starts off with the fundamentals - not long explanations of theory, but the essential building blocks of jazz soloing - namely how to identify and play from specific notes within a chord. There is guidance on how to become fluent in targeting specific notes as well as what level the guitarist should be before moving on to more complex ideas involving chromatic approach notes and the bebop scale. What i like best about these books (so far) is that they are undiluted. They are aimed exclusively at readers who want to improve their single note jazz lines over the said chord progression.I was a little dubious about buying the paperback version, as this appears to be an independent publisher and they can be a bit hit and miss. However, Fundamental Changes books appear to be of extremely high-quality binding and printing.I am already planning which edition to buy after I have mastered my current batch. Highly recommended to the budding jazz guitarist.

Empfehlenswert!
