Belacan Shrimp Paste - Shrimp & 6A Brand (250g/8.82oz) Product of Malaysia

This product when you open it you almost need a gas mask, but it makes the food taste authentic. For value and everything else it is very good. Only problem is the smell. It’s very strong, but it is shrimp concentrated. It is what it’s supposed to be so this review is not a negative review in any way. I was happy with the compliments. I got when I made the dish I was needing to make so it works perfectly. People who had eaten this dish overseas said mine tasted exactly like they remembered it. I made it in an Indonesian recipe. it is exactly what it’s supposed to be and that chicken was incredible….

Great value item for price point but not quite as pungent as the really good belacan from Malaysia

Get ready for a wild olfactory ride. This paste smells like the bottom of a south Louisiana dumpster on a hot summer day during the peak shrimping season. But don't you let that horrific scent dissuade you from purchasing Belacan Shrimp Paste's product. You will not find a better paste on the market. But do yourself a favor, wear a mask when opening it and vacuum seal that block up tight before putting it back in your pantry. Otherwise, you are going to have to hire a priest to come an exorcise that smell out of your home.

I really like Thai curry pastes that include shrimp paste in them so I decided to get just that ingredient and see how it tastes before adding other things like onion, garlic, ginger, peppers, etc. I shaved a tiny bit off into some oil fried that and the smell permeated my kitchen and my clothes. it is both fishy and like stinky feet. sort of like fish sauce or garum. just plain weird on its own. the sauce I ended up making with it was delicious but that smell follows me now. it's maybe in my hair. when I opened it I let my cats have a sniff and they looked like they had their minds blown. I didn't let them have any though because I suspect it is very salty.

The main ingredient for Sambal belacan. You can grill it or fry it.. just make sure you do it outdoors or else you'll ended with WW3 with you western spouse who thinks this delicious and delightful thing is rancid dead animal smell. Some western folks can endure it some don't. When I have a big fight with hubby, I take this out and grill it on the stove! The smells lingers for days and stuck on your curtains, bed sheets etc. Haha.. such sweet revenge! Just like durian, we Asian Love it!
