With his eighth and most personal film, Alfonso Cuarón recreated the early-1970s Mexico City of his childhood, narrating a tumultuous period in the life of a middle-class family through the experiences of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio, in a revelatory screen debut), the indigenous domestic worker who keeps the household running. Charged with the care of four small children abandoned by their father, Cleo tends to the family even as her own life is shaken by personal and political upheavals. Written, directed, shot, and coedited by Cuarón, Roma is a labor of love with few parallels in the history of cinema, deploying monumental black-and-white cinematography, an immersive soundtrack, and a mixture of professional and nonprofessional performances to shape its author’s memories into a world of enveloping texture, and to pay tribute to the woman who nurtured him. Gorgeous movie, gorgeous packaging
Netflix is huge, and they often put out great movies. But maybe you don't want to subscribe forever, and want access to your favorite movies forever?Enter: The Criterion Collection. This is one of the best TCC sets I own. The presentation, the booklet (more like novelette), box, and special features are truly what this movie deserves.Roma should've won Best Picture at the Oscars. I like to think that by buying this beautiful set, I'm supporting great art and workmanship (and The Criterion Collection) without having to pay $100+ per year for Netflix.

Beautiful Movie
Beautiful film. I've always been a fan of this director . Y to Mama, Children of Men, I don't think he's made a misstep. Beautifully captured in black and white , and following the life of a young Mexican maid, as she works for a family in Mexico city during some turbulent years, mirroring , and essentially a tribute to the woman that helped raise him, the director takes us on an amazing journey through the life of her, and his family. Well done, and a must see , for the cinema lover.

A slice of life - in the most glorious B&W images
This movie is so beautiful! From the crisp clarity of the black and white images like nothing I've seen before, to the wide field of vision - in some of the most spectacular panoramic views on film , to the tender and understated acting of the primary characters, I just loved this movie and waited one long year to actually have it on DVD to watch it again and again. It gets its well-deserved release on this Criterion Collection 2-disc set.

This should have won Best Picture
I liked Parasite,... but... this was better. This is a movie. Parasite was a movie also... but this was more like real life. Amazing movie I don't know where to start with the little details. I can't recommend this enough. (I say "This is a movie" because I also watched "Knives Out" and thought it would have been better as an hour long TV special... screw that movie compared to ROMA! It was ok... but nothing compared to Roma.)

Why purchase a movie you can watch anytime for free on Netflix?
Forget for a moment the fanatastic extras on this DVD (and they are ALL terrific). If you have a 5 .1 sound systems, after watching the movie for just a few minutes you will easily realize it represents the best audio experience from any home video EVER and by a longshot (including any big Hollywood action feature). This makes an all ready memorable movie feel much more involving.

Masterpiece
One of my favorite movies of all time now, a very powerful and intimate look at Mexico in the late 70’s and the life of an indigenous working woman. Alfonso Cuarón hit the ball out of the park with this one. Unfortunately if you don’t like quieter, slower movies this might not be for you, but I highly recommend you at least give it a chance.
