My House Is Killing Me!: The Home Guide for Families with Allergies and Asthma

A Leave-No-Stone-Unturned Detective Story
Jeff May, as you will read in his books, goes above and beyond, tracking down and unearthing what is making the air quality in your home so unhealthy and causing illness. He is a down-to-earth, dedicated and trustworthy detective who will go over every detail of what could be causing your house to be sick. I was lucky enough to be able to have him come over to my house for a walk-through and came away with about 10 pages of recommendations along with color photos which is a big help as it is hard to remember everything that is said. His book, along with another, "The Mold Survival Guide," written by him and his wife, Connie May, is another comprehensive book written in an easy-to-understand format and are full of information for the uninitiated in the world of air quality and the problems it can cause. I recommend both these books!

Useful advice and usable reference
The funny thing about the book is that the title sounds very alarmist. And while it does tell a few horror stories, most of the book is about providing information. It is far less sensationalistic than the title implies. I read it first as an education about air quality. Then we used it to recommend solutions in an air quality crisis. Now I use it mainly as a reference guide when I have a question and can't remember something.I originally purchased this book a few years ago when I was having problems with allergies and found problems with the HVAC system in our home. Thanks to implementing key parts of his advice, our air quality significantly improved as evidenced by our health issues subsiding. We were spending time at doctors offices weekly or every other week. After we fixed some of the problems in our house (using the book's advice), we found ourselves rarely at the doctor (a few times per year). No more ear tubes for the kids either (we had gone through 4 sets already).I have lent this book and recommended this book to friends. We recently moved and find ourselves needing to make minor changes to improve the air quality in our new (yet older) home. This book is a great reference----I break it out and remind myself what things to consider and where problems can occur (as well as ways to solve the problems). As an added bonus, it helps to be better educated about air quality when dealing with HVAC, insulation, and other service professionals----you can select the companies more effectively, and make decisions more easily. How often can one book help out in all those ways? Great book. Worthwhile purchase.

Every home owner should read!
I am recovering from mold illness, and I wish I had read this book before buying my last house! I got incredibly ill from water damage in my home and had to move and throw away all my possessions to avoid contaminating my new home. Now that I am better, this book contains so much information to maintain a health living space. Everyone should read this, whether they own or rent, if they want to be healthy in their home!

Excellent Reference
My son was diagnosed with asthma and I decided to do what I could to help him through housekeeping and house improvements. This book was the place I started. After reading through this book and looking at the pictures I was able to make a list of things I wanted to do and the order they needed to be done. It made a huge difference for our family. The pictures only add to the text and help to clarify what the author is discussing. The text is clear and easy to read. The directions are simple and informative. WELL WORTH THE MONEY!I did not find this book to be overwhelming or full of too much information. Rather it was a perfect book for home owners who suffer from allergies or asthma.

This is a very informative book and has helped me ...
This is a very informative book and has helped me get rid of a few spots in the house that we causing me sinus and other allergy issues. I have worked my halfway through it and I can attest that its going to be an invaluable reference for me. The issue I have is with the Kindle version which lacks ALL photographs that are referenced by the text in the Kindle Edition. Consquently I have dropped 2 stars until this issue is resolved. All in all please do get the book if you have to deal with Asthma and Allergy.Note to Author: The Kindle edition needs to be fixed so that the photos are visible.

Very helpful book for all homeowners and renters
This helps you understand everything you need to know about living clean and green in today's homes. The book really has great focus by chapter on areas of the home to know what problems can occur and how to take care of them. Great book.

Good Ideas for Reducing Household Allergens and Chemicals
May's book offers helpful tips to reduce exposure to allergens and chemicals throughout your home. He reminds you to check places that are often overlooked, such as the drain pan under the refrigerator, the drain pan for your A/C unit, and duct work. Something as simple as your old couch might be the trigger for many symptoms. This book is a good start for someone who wants to try anything they can to reduce their chemical and allergen load.

A really helpful book
I've read several other books on this topic, plus consulted with a doctor specializing in environmental illness (EI), but I still learned a lot from this book and it's my favorite. Why? Because it's full of practical, doable things YOU can do around your house to make it a healthier environment. Many of the other EI folks want you to tear your house apart, even when there's no evidence that your house is the culprit. This approach makes far more sense. Some patients must, of course, take drastic measures, but many of us do not. Start with this book, then read John and Lynn Bower's books if you need more detail. It's an easy read and cheap. I highly recommend it.
