Long one of America’s most cherished byways, Route 66 remains a popular tourist attraction and travel route for thousands of travelers every year. While stretches of the once-glorious road have been paved over or bypassed by the interstates, the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica along the path of the “double six” remains chock-full of unique roadside attractions, spectacular natural landscapes, and fascinating historical landmarks. Communities throughout each of the eight states touched by the “Main Street of America”—Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California—have embraced this vital piece of American history and offer a vast array of opportunities to experience the grandeur as well as the lost innocence of the glory days of Route 66. In Travel Route 66 , Route 66 expert and enthusiast Jim Hinckley provides detailed descriptions and itineraries that allow travelers of all ages and inclinations to explore the myriad wonders to be found along the highway’s 2,500 miles. In addition to specific recommendations for places to visit, eat, and spend the night, Hinckley presents history for the highway and its attractions and suggests detours and daytrips off the beaten path, all while providing a vivid picture of the road that has long captured the imaginations of travelers from throughout the world. Illustrated with a wealth of color photos and vintage memorabilia, Travel Route 66 is a practical and entertaining guide to the America’s Mother Road. Easy to read book about the streets that make up route 66 ten years ago.
I enjoyed reading about the history of the various road stops along route 66. Much has probably changed since the writing of this book, but it still gave me idea of what to expect from the historic highway. I would have liked to have seen road maps and more pictures although the narrative was easy to read.

Hinkley KNOWS Route 66
GREAT BOOK. I own a number of books on Route 66. If you want detailed in depth information on specific site the 'Route 66 Encyclopedia' by Jim Hinckley is your go to book to look things up alphabetically. This is the one that sits on the coffee table. If you want a guide for driving or riding (motorcycle) down 66 with notes on what to see where in geographical order this book by Jim Hinckley is you go to guide. This is the one that travels with you. The set of state maps available here on Amazon are also a great assist in entering travel routes into you GPS

Fantastic
I bought this book prior to our trip for general information. Turns out it was our bible, encyclopedia, and road map all in one! It was perfect for us to follow and the pictures were a plus. I could write dates and notations in the pages for later reference. I would say it is a must for anyone taking this wonderful road trip.

Buz's 30 route 66 tour
very informative and gives main route to take....also gives details on staying on the orig rte 66. What roads not to take, especially if in a motorhome. My route is already marked for the 30 day trip we will be taking in april.....from Chicago to California and everything in between. thanks for the great explanations and stories.

Written in 2014 -is this still current?
I bought this to prepare for a trip on Route 66 but I’m afraid not all info is still current as it was written ten years ago. I have looked up some of the businesses that are referenced in the book and found that they are permanently closed. I’m thinking online resources are more current.

A comprehensive guide for all Route 66 fanatics.
I bought this book as it was recently published and we were due to travel on route 66 - this book was invaluable as unfortunately Route 66 is not always easy to follow- roads are closed, road signs have been removed by collectors . My son was determined to follow the route as exactly as possible and I spent many happy hours directing using this book, a road map and our Sat Nav - most of the time this was to make sure we were going in the right direction!! We had a wonderful adventurous holiday and saw most if not all of the sights described in the book- our only wish was for a road map to be included somewhere in this book. Another very minor criticism was that some of the roads had closed as I suspect will happen year by year as parts of route 66 becomes less used. This book is certainly the one to buy if you are looking to follow the route as accurately as possible.
