What ages are recommended? Would my 6 and 8 year old enjoy playing with the family?

The manufacturer gives the recommendation for players from 14 years

How similar to 7Wonders is this? The description talks about science, military, resources, etc...

Not especially similar - there are only four resources, which are committed to four tracks (science, technology, military and exploration) up which you civilisation can advance as the game progresses. There is also a map, on which you can place tokens and explore unexplored hexes (a little bit like Carcassonne). It is more complicated than Seven Wonders by a long shot, but I can highly recommend Tapestry - it has beautiful pieces too.
