Fantastic Trilogy
Mark Lawrence's first major series is an amazing piece of work, well written with a great story and the main character, Jorg, is one that's likely to go down in 'grimdark' history as one of the genre's best 'bad boys'. I already own this series (along with most of Mark's other works) and have read it twice, but I bought this three book package as a Christmas present for my mum, who's just read the Game of Thrones books and falled in love with them. I think she's also going to love Jorg !

Great books, but you need to bear with them at the start
This trilogy, and the other based in the same world (Prince of Fools) are great reads. A really unique gritty dark story in an original world with a great twist that is slowly revealed throughout the first book. Well written and engaging. My only complaint is the unnecessarily dark opening. Apologies for a potential minor spoiler, but the choice to have the protagonist engaged in sexual violence at the opening of the book was, in my opinion, poor and unnecessary. I understand Lawrence is trying to convey that our "protagonist" is not a hero or someone we should be rooting for but I feel this was poorly done. In later books he grows as a writer (and a character) and this doesn't happen or isn't mentioned again or in the other trilogy. I can't help but feel it casts a shadow over an otherwise good opening though. My advise is bare with it, I think Lawrence learns from this mistake

Great anti hero story set in an original and imaginative future. Thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy.

S re-read to see what I missed first time.
I read this before the other trilogies ( Red Queen and Ancestors) it was kind of hard going. But after reading the other two trilogies and Brothers of the Road, I thought I'd give it another go, but realised I had given it (Broken Empire) away. Hence the re-purchase. Red Queen my favourite though.

Anti Hero
Please do not expect a light story! This is a fabulously written series. Mark Lawrence is a phenomenal writer. This is about a protaganist who is not a good guy! This is like reading a story about the Punisher. The main character is not mean to be a knight in shining armour. But quite the opposite. If you like a darker read, YOU WILL LOVE IT!!! Both my husband and I loved it enough that we gifted it to a friend.

A Villian-Hero
Unlike most stories, our protagonist is a villain who ends up saving the day for his own selfish gain. Author has a descriptive and in-your-face writing style and a compelling ending to the trilogy.
