How hard would it be to re-program 100 to be license free?

to my knowledge and i could be wrong...any radios being operated in the FRS frequency range have to be FCC certified, non-programmable, permanent ptt-busy channel lock out, as we all permanent transmitting powers (cannot modify settings to output more than half watt on FRS freq. and 2watts on GMRS freq.) If it is programmed with ANY GMRS frequencies, it needs a GMRS license to operate, (PARTS 95 certified device must be used with this license), using a call sign is required.

SO, short answer is, if you can reprogram it, it cannot legally be used on FRS or GMRS frequencies. The UV-5 cannot legally transmit on FRS/GMRS frequencies either, and a HAM license does not license you to operate on GMRS frequencies.

Again, i could be wrong. but i'v been looking deeply into these matters, just got my GMRS license, MIDLAND PARTS 95 cert radios on their way, and working on getting my HAM technician's license, most of it seems to be, "don't do this/do this" sort of stuff.

Will baofeng uv-5r programing cable work to program them with chirp?

Yes, UV-5R programming cable is compatible with GT-22. You can program it with CHIRP.  Also, Radioddity FTDI cable is recommended.

is the gt-22 better than the bf-r5 ?

How many miles does it get?

It all depends on terrain. If you are using the .5 watt setting and talking from handheld radio to handheld radio I get about 1/2 mile in suburban areas. 2 watts moves that to about a mile.

If you have good line of sight you can reach out very far. I have used this radio to reach into another radio that was 18 miles away but that second radio was at 2200 feet on a mountain.
