why does this model say am and fm and others are same model but only fm?

You can get scans on both am and fm. Sometimes the frequency works better on AM then FM depending where you are located. It gives you that option.

Does it show words received on a screen? having words from prev sessions helped me w/sim products.

No, it does NOT display any received words. The display (screen) shows the frequencies being received as it scans through the band, and other information such as AM or FM, scan rate, battery condition. It does not show any words which have been received.
