I cannot recommend Dog Training for Kids by Vanessa Estrada Marin enough! This book has been a game-changer for our family as we welcomed a new puppy. While it’s written with kids in mind, it’s just as helpful for adults. The language is clear and easy to understand, and the step-by-step instructions are simple to follow. I’d say it’s perfect for kids around 2nd grade (7 years old) and up. What makes this book stand out is how incredibly organized it is. Whether you're looking for a specific command, behavior issue, or question, it's super easy to flip to the exact section you need. It even includes troubleshooting tips and sample daily schedules by age, which we found incredibly helpful. Our 8-year-old has really taken more ownership and responsibility with our puppy thanks to this book. For some reason, when we say, “Don’t keep repeating the command—wait 10 seconds to give the puppy time to respond,” it doesn’t quite land. But when the book says it? Instant compliance! It really empowers kids to learn and practice training in a fun, structured way. As a bonus, I took it to our local UPS store and had it spiral bound. Now I can lay it flat on the counter or fold it back and hold it with one hand while training—so convenient! Whether you're a brand-new puppy owner or have some experience under your belt, this book is a must-have for both kids and adults. Truly one of the most practical and enjoyable training books we've used.

Darling and helpful book. So well written so kids can easily follow. It’s great training advice even for adults and seasoned dog owners but written simply enough for kids to tackle one training task at a time. Great book teaching a great skill or hobby for kids to learn.

There were a lot of options out there on the same topic, but this one is pretty good! Very informative yet entertaining. The recommended age range is 5-10, but I would say it’s pretty in-depth/dense for most 5-6 year olds. My 8 year old is a very advanced reader (more like a 12 year old) and it seems more at his level.

Very informative

Far exceeded my expectations. While aimed at kids this book would be valuable for dog owners of any age. It's clearly written and the Table of Contents and Index make it easy to find specific topics. I especially like that safety suggestions for both dog and human are highlighted in yellow. Along with basic training chapters there are chapters on more advanced tricks and games to play with your dog.

I am trying to get my 10 year old interested in helping with training our dog. She’s having a lot of fun teaching her the basics right now and I am sure she’ll have fun training her the tricks soon! Such a great book!

Thick book, lots of reading, more for teen

My smart 10 yr old granddaughter is going to appreciate this book. She is trying hard to teach her 8 month old blue heeler some tricks and commands. She’s doing great on her own, but I think this book will give her some good guidance. Simple to read with illustrations. I think this is right up her alley, and she’ll appreciate it. She’s a great reader, so I think this book would be great for someone like her, age/reading ability/learning about dogs.

Kids are great. So are dogs. Don’t expect much from either.

Wonderful reward based training, it does have American English, but that hasn't been an issue. Lovely to see our son reach for the book and learn

Fantastic book, informative and easy for kids and adults to read

A birthday gift for my 8yo granddaughter who loves dogs and will have a new pup in a few months. Covers all the basics in a kid friendly format.
