My old key fob worked fine prior to changing the case. Battery connection terminals are junk. I work as an electronic repair tech for a living. This thing is complete trash. The metal used for the battery connection to the circuit board is weak and flimsy. My remote worked once. After that, never worked again. After 10+ times of adjusting the battery contacts over and over because they just weren't making a good contact. The case doesn't snap together real solid so now, its super loose because of all the adjusting and it still doesn't work properly.

I bought this to replace the case body, as my OE piece key ring broke off the end. There are 2 main bodies to the fob- the front half holds together the spring blade and contains the microchip, the rear half holds the button circuit and battery. You can replace the internal button chip on the back half of the key, by splitting rear the body, after separating the 2 halves. Do not be tempted to use screwdriver to unscrew the plate on the new piece unless you really need to - it holds the spring loaded key blade half of the fob together - if you do, it is a total PIA to align the loaded spring to work again. You can do everything without taking the front half apart. The key blade can be removed (or replaced) without doing this (look for the punch pin on the arm hinge). You do need to remove the microchip out of the original front half to use in this new piece - so use the screwdriver on your old piece (you will see how the spring loaded blade explodes apart) and remove the tiny chip capsule.The OE case components do not completely match those on this (you cannot snap apart pieces of the old and install on this piece- they don't fit so well). This one does not have a rubber O-ring that seals the rear chip area. The micro chip area is also not enclosed on this replacement fob-- easy to insert the old chip, but it can fall out, but is secured after the fob is completely assembled.Pros: It works if you take your time.Cons: No O-ring seal, weaker spring for the switch blade. Components are not a complete match for the original case-- You can't just snap the original key half onto the rear of this one.

I ordered this to replace my daughter's key fob for her 2002 Beetle. The quality of the new housing is very good and she is quite happy. There was definitely some issues with getting it all out together though (aside from my own difficulties). It comes with a small screwdriver to take apart the key section- the screwdriver tip is too small for the screw and it won't loosen it. Thankfully I have a tiny screwdriver kit so I got it off, but if you don't have one you may have an issue. The biggest issue is that the spot for the chip in the old key fob is not the same size as the new fob- the new fob is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller, so I had to use a knife and razor blade to chisel out the plastic soni could fit it in, and then a small piece of duct tape to keep it in.Some tips- the spring for the switchblade key has a spot on each end that it catches into a groove. Make sure you get them in there (when you look at them you'll see what I mean, its not difficult), and, heres the part it took me a LONG time to figure out, you have to spin the key and basically unwind the spring about two spins, to get it to pop open when you push the button. Don't screw it back together until you test it. And be careful when you first open it because things fly everywhere!

Very Happy !I have no problem(s) with this item at all. I did not bother with getting the new key fob cut. You shouldn't either if a new fob is not needed. Transfer the old fob (cut key portion) onto the new case. Open old main body and take out the circuit board and "snap" it into place. Take out the VW Logo Sticker (it is where the battery lives) and put in a new battery while you are there. I had a fully functioning remote/key in 5 minutes. I had lost some of the functions on my remote due to the key wearing out.You will have difficulty finding a locksmith to cut new key and transfer transponder over. If your physical key still works then let it be and transfer that portion to new assembled key/remote !!!!Keep ALL your old parts BTW !!!!

I am very happy with the product. My old key worked fine but the key cracked from the base. I use the shell to move the circuit AND the chip, then I took it to make the copy of the key and it all worked perfectly.The plastic is 1st class material. It has rubber sealing the edges and all fits perfectly. I only have one "old key" otherwise I would buy another one.

It’s a good quality feeling key, switching everything over including the immobilizer chip was awesome. I only gave it 3 stars as it came broken. Other than that it’s awesome quality!
