Ilo Ilo

Takes you inside a Singapore family, who has just hired a Filipino maid. We watch as relationships slowly develop between the maid and the son, who is a holy spoiled terror, but slowly grows fond of the maid and vice versa. The parents are odious, esp the wife who is a spoiled thing, so we can see why their son is so nasty. Even though you expect the worst, it does not turn into a horror movie of exploitation, but rather introduces you into this world where one wealthy society exploits another. Moves slowly, but really just the pace of real life.

This movie starts somewhat slow, but that quickly changes. A most beautiful and warm relationship develops between the 'auntie' and the spoiled kid she is hired to care for. A most beautiful movie!

Not engaging.

This is an interesting movie that portrays family dynamics brilliantly. A bit depressing but the filmmaker did capture the time period very well. I liked the character development.

A pretty good film, but I'm not sure it deserves the kind of rave reviews it received. When I watch a film like this I want to be moved, but this film insists on a kind of quiet artistry that never makes a claim. Certainly, life is hard, and this film explores that desperation, but I would have liked it to go bigger than it does. But, again, a pretty good film--acting is fantastic.

Nicely done. Saw interesting interview on NHK and just have to watch this. Bring back memories of my childhood.

Nowhere was it made clear that the sub-titles weren't in English. Unfairly/misleadingly/incompletely advertised in my view. Any French speakers out there looking for a cut-price DVD?

Très beau film que je ne me lasse pas de revoir. Grande sensibilité dans le jeu des acteurs et l'écriture du scénario et pour ne rien gâcher, l'esthétique du film est vraiment au rendez-vous. À voir.

Ce film est plein d'émotionsLa vie et les soucis quotidiens d'une famille chinoise à Singapour et l'arrivée d'une domestique philippine y sont joués avec pudeur.

I am sure its a great film but this version is in Mandarin with French subtitles with no English subtitles option
