Would this be effective on a charging pit bull?

Sadly, I had to use it on a medium size breed. It stopped him on his tracks as he ran after us and before he could attack me or my 3 small pooches. I sprayed it right on the eyes starting at 10 ft. He did stop, tried to recover, and re-charged; and I responded, too for about 3-4 times. The repellent's stream was dead-on and strong (always shake it before your dog walks).

good for human attacks as well?

I don't know. But an Amazon search for Spitfire by Sabre will provide you with an effective (and refillable) spray for humans. I have used Halt to deter aggressive dogs and find it VERY effective for that purpose. But I still carry a Spitfire on my keychain. Watch a Spitfire video and you'll see why.

How many uses or sprays are in one can?

These are not metered sprays. It will continue to spray as long as you keep your finger on the button. How many sprays in one can = depends...

How many cans are in this package? $17.99 is awfully high for 1.5oz.

I have not tried this spray yet, and I hope I never had to. However, my service dog was attacked recently and the vet bills were close to $200. I was unable to walk through a store until he healed. If this spray works when it's needed...it would be worth it.
