Do these need to be refrigerated after opening?

No. They do need to be kept in a cool place between 40- 50 degrees Fahrenheit (5-10 degrees Celsius). I do refrigerate mine.

once opened how long do the cherries last?

I'm guilty of storing them in a cupboard below the kitchen counter. (They sugared when I stored them in the fridge.) I transferred some to the pretty red and white glass jar; I pull from this jar when I need a cherry fix. I left the rest in the metal can, which was NOT a good idea. NEXT TIME, I will fill my pretty jar, and pour the rest of the cherries into a glass jar with a plastic wrap barrier between the metal lid and the cherries. WHY? Because the juice that stayed behind on the top rim of the metal can turned an icky color and smelled metallic. Kind'a like storing tomato sauce in the fridge in it's metal can. I will keep storing the cherries in the cupboard, as I haven't died yet, and I've been doing this for over a year or two. I eat 1-3 cherries at a time so they last a long time.

No pits. They do have a very heavy syrup that gets things sticky and is good on ice cream.
