this thing is well made and it's a relatively easy "puzzle" to do... you just need to have patience; a LOT of patience... you're pressing in small and delicate foam pieces that sometimes, don't quite line up. If you're prone to percussive maintenance resulting from frustration when something doesn't work right away, this set might not be for you... a lot of the pieces need to be gently worked in together and it's very *VERY* easy to put too much force. If you go into OCD mode when building Lego, this is a similar experience, though i have to stress that it takes a LOT more patience on account of the tiny foam pieces being infinitely more delicate than ABS plastic. No... we didn't break any pieces. :) The manual is nice - it starts off with some information about Blackbeard and the ship itself. It would be SUPER awesome if the instructions labeled the different parts and sections of the ship as you built it, but alas... still pretty nice. One negative about the instructions is that the order of assembly isn't exactly labeled, so you need to think things through, before you start assembling. For example: when doing the masts - go one section at a time, put the head (see... had to look up what that part was called) onto the mast first, then attach the sail, then do the rigging, then do the next section. We built the entire mast first, then worked down from the top with the rigging, then did the sails... and tried attaching them assembled. we had to go back and pop out the rigging to get enough working room for the sails. The sails' head is difficult to install when you have the whole sail attached to it and can't get good leverage/control to wiggle it into place. The one complaint i have about the set is the stairs leading up to helm (had to look that word up, too) - we couldn't get the outside part of the stairs to lock into the notch, it seemed like the notches were wider apart than the stair treads. the notch on the outside railing for the stairs also seemed too big for the corresponding notch on the deck I built this with a 10 year old... i'd venture to say that the set is maybe a bit too complicated for that level of dexterity and patience. My child was engaged and did a LOT of the building, but it's not something i feel i could have just left them to build completely unsupervised. There were a few sections (like the masts) that required a bit more finesse.

The quality of materials is not great. It's essentially plastic cardboard pieces, but the veneer pictures are great looking. It's pretty fun to assemble since it's an actual project and not 10 minutes and toss it. You're given the dimensions but it looks larger than I expected, and cool looking display piece.

This is not the historical ship of the historical Blackbeard—it is, in fact, the Black Pearl from Disney’s Pirates franchise. And. It. Is. Gorgeous. It’s hard to describe the pleasure I have of walking past her every day at home. It is not nearly as difficult to construct as some people say. There are couple parts that you might want to use a drop of super glue, but otherwise you will find the ship becomes sturdier the further you go with the main structural pieces. Details? Good God, rich with detail. The LED lights, if you follow the instructions and take your time, look fantastic. The interiors of the ship are a deep red color so the LED lights make the light from the stern cabin look warm. The contrast with the deep dark grey and weathered black of the exterior is striking. I have always wanted a nice big model of a pirate ship. I went through so many plastic sets I gave up on because of the time, skill and effort they demand. With this 3D puzzle (I have had it for years and only now am I reviewing it), I have my perfect dark, eerie and majestic pirate ship model. Even if you are a modeler of detailed, fully rigged ships, you’ll still love this ingenious and magnificent puzzle. And in the dark, it casts ghostly shadows over the entire room. And it’s under $50, making it a great gift worth far more than it costs. I only purchased mine at first because it wasn’t ridiculously expensive. Seeing its quality, its worth twice that.

My brother and I built this cardboard model. Even after a few other builds, this is his favorite. The parts wrapping around the hull can be difficult and you need to put it somewhere where little hands cannot get to it. I would recommend getting some glue for it as some of the thinner pieces by the sails tend to want to fall apart if handled, hence the 4-star rating, they could include a small amount of standard paper glue.. The lighting is a cool feature and looks nice, but the switch is kind of difficult to get at/use. It is a decent sized model which is cool. The build wasn't difficult but may challenge some beginners. Delivered on time as usual. No missing pieces. It was an enjoyable model to build...but 4 hours? Nah. Take your time and enjoy it. A little information on the history of "The Queen Ann's Revenge" is included.

Our adult son has been crazy for jigsaw puzzles since he was a little boy. We get him one every year at Christmas. This year we decided to go a little different and looked at 3D puzzles. We chose this because it has a lot of little details, has led lights, and can be displayed after being finished. He seemed to like it when he opened it Christmas Eve, but wasn't particularly enthusiastic. Fast forward to 11pm, after they had gone home and gotten three excitable little kids to bed. His fiancee texts me pictures of him with it halfway put together. He told her he wasn't going to bed until he finished it. It's really nice-looking when finished and with the lights in. Very detailed, looks great, especially in a darkened room with the led lights on. It was challenging and interesting enough for him refused to walk away from it unfinished; he would absolutely have put it aside if it wasn't. He has it on a high shelf. Unlike flat puzzles, it doesn't require glue in order to display it. He likes it so much that he's said he would love to get more for his birthday and Christmas. We will definitely be buying the other versions. Excellent gift for someone who likes puzzles or is interested in pirate ships.

I love building models and have completed many of them. Although, I have never really enjoyed the types that don't require glue to put them together. I have tried wooden ones where the pieces slide together and, while it looked nice, wasn't enough of a challenge for me to enjoy. This puzzle surprised me! It does just slide together, but has many pieces, and becomes very intricate at times. The pieces fit together extremely well which makes the overall ship look beautiful. The instructions were easy to follow. The pieces were easy to remove without worrying about destroying any of them, as long as you were careful. As I put it together the ship turned out to be very sturdy. I didn't have to worry about pieces falling off, or the ship being squashed, which handling it. The end result was a nice sized ship with a lot of detail. The LED lights are a nice addition, and it looks great on the display stand, which you assemble as well. It was challenging enough to keep me interested, and priced extremely well. Keep in mind that even though this model is built without paint or glue, it may be too difficult for young children. I definitely recommend this for any model lover and will certainly keep my eye out for similar products.

The Queen Anne's Revenge was Captain Blackbeards 300 ton vessel originally named the Concord, a frigate built in England in 1710. A year later, it was captured by the French and renamed La Concorde De Nantes as a merchant vessel that transported cargo and slaves. She was also just over 300 feet long and close to 30 foot wide with 40 canons (the canons were added by Captain Blackbeard when he stole her from the French). She was the fastest vessel of that time and no other could sail her speed. This was from having 10 sails and her sleek design would cut through the seas... This model took me approximately 20 hours to complete and was a absolute joy over a 2 week period. I would recommend only taking pieces from the boards for the section you are doing as there are many similar pieces that can be accidently used and cause a complete tear down and rebuild. I also highly recommend using a medium heat hot glue gun that is cordless and glue everything after you confirm correct position/placement. I used a dremel duel heat hot glue gun on low heat and would just draw the glue from the tip without touching the trigger. You do not want globs of glue as it will take away from the ship. Tape the wiring down first and then glue down as it will move around (unless you have more than 2 hands, lol) Take your time and enjoy! First of all, this ship model is very large and very cool. Once completed, it makes a great decorative piece for the home. However, there are quite a few issues. The instruction manual is not very clear—for example, it doesn’t clearly indicate which side should face up or which side should face outward. The quality of the paper also needs improvement; it’s very easy to damage the paper during the assembly process. The fit between the paper parts is not great either—some parts are very difficult to insert, while others are too loose and need to be fixed with glue or tapes.
