Impressive insights into challenges of senior living and need for Community
This is the best analysis I have ever read of the need to think beyond hospitality to provide seniors the kind of environment in which they can truly thrive. I lead a small company serving about 1,000 seniors in assisted living. This is our guide to helping our residents to feel like full members of a vibrant community.

Senior Living Operator MUST READ!!
I had this book for two years sitting on my nightstand waiting for me to make some time to read it. I finally bit the bullet, picked it up and started reading. I could not put it down. I have been in the senior living field for over 30 years, working in the for-profit and not-for-profit single and multi-site provider space. I wish I had made time for this book sooner. It is a thought provoking, industry rattling page turner. Throughout this book is a call to action that drives you to want to operate communities differently. It beckons industry leaders to do better and work more collaboratively with residents and team members at the table, providing them a sense of purpose. This book opens your eyes to the possibilities of harnessing the expertise of residents/clients and team members while being respectful of the need for operators to run their business. Now that I have read this, my view on community culture is different. As an Administrator/Executive Director, I have always viewed myself as a mayor of a small town. I now see how important it is to view myself as a community leader. There is a difference which is explained so clear and thoughtfully in this book. Thank you for opening my mind to future possibilities!

Do not put this book on the backburner. I should have read it the first day it was available.
This book...if you have ever had any encounter with senior living; working, volunteering, as a family member or just wonder how the industry has changed in 40 years, this book is for you. Page 2 had tears rolling down my face and instead of being ashamed of my place and position in this industy, I was fueled to resolve and advocacy for change. We cannot be better until we are able to learn from the past. This is not a "work book" or something you should read to be better at a job, this is a book that will teach you how to be a better human, empathetic and eyes open wide to the reality of ageism.

Excellent commentary!
Such a wonderful book. I have read many on this topic but this is easily the best explanation of and justification for Person Directed Care in our senior living environments that I have read. It is a clear and easy read and I recommend as core reading for all staff and family carepartners in these environments. Very well done indeed. I am purchasing copies for my team.

Very Thought Provoking!
What an insightful book! This book will spark so many meaningful discussions, not only with others in the industry, but with your spouses and friends. I really like that each chapter ends with questions for discussion and introspection. Very thought provoking! The author also shares successes and failures that she has experienced, such a great learning tool! Highly recommend!
