Amazing
Cannot recommend these enough, they are fantastic. We bought an old house and found that with a single thermostat downstairs the rooms upstairs would frequently be at a significant differential from the thermostat, too cold or too hot. These things solve the problem beautifully, I can now set the temperature individually for every room, turn off heat in rooms that aren't being used and have customised schedules for all of them. There are some gotchas that can catch you out: 1) In the app if a valve shows that it's below it's target it will show the heating icon which indicates that it's requesting heat, however despite this if the current temperature isn't more than 0.5 below the target the main thermostat won't actually activate. This confused me for the best part of 2 hours, I went through many resets of all the hive devices trying to solve a problem that didn't really exist. It's very silly that it indicates that the valve is requesting heat when it really isn't, hopefully they will fix this at some point. 2) After initially installing them they need some time to calibrate and may not activate when it looks like they should. I found that deliberately setting them to high and low temperatures to trigger the activation helps to speed this along. I think for the first few nights they will open/close slower than they are able to as part of the calibration cycle. TL;DR if you think they're not working but the app reports everything is fine, it probably is fine, just leave it for a bit. Also I've noticed sometimes it looks like it should be heating one of the radiators but isn't, but if you touch the radiator it's already hot. I guess there must be some energy-saving duty cycle to avoid running the boiler continuously unnecessarily. 3) Leave at least a couple of radiators without these so water can flow freely. The bathroom and hallway are ideal candidates for no smart valve. Then just set the hallway manual valve to roughly halfway so that whenever any of the other radiators demand heat the hallway gets 50%. I've found this works really well. Home Assistant is also worth using as it lets you monitor all the smart stuff in the house and create automations based on events etc, and get access to all of the sensor data. These things are worth their weight in gold, I wish I'd got them sooner. Pretty sure they will pay for themselves over time too with all the insights into the system that I'm getting from the data coming off them, and the ability to not heat unused rooms. Being able to actually have the whole house be at the same temperature is so wonderful though and it's worth buying them just for that alone.

A great addition now that the price has dropped
I have had a Hive thermostat for years and toyed with the idea of adding the radiator valves once gas prices increased. I took the plunge and replaced the valves on 5 of my radiators with Hive valves which was a considerable outlay but I can see that it will save me money in the long run. I work from home so it allows me to only heat my little office during the day and just have the other rooms set to a minimum 17C. Each radiator valve demands heat only as needed and overall t works very well as I can feel the different warmth in the rooms of my house. Now that I have bought them of course the price has dropped to £38 each which I think is good value now - better than it was at £50 each when I bought mine. It's definitely worth familiarising yourself with the fitting instructions and requirements before purchasing these. Once I understood what i was doing it was easy to unscrew the old TRV and screw on the new Hive ones. The supplied adapters fitted two of my radiators but I had to call Hive (30 minute call queue) to order adapters for Giacomini valves and these arrived FOC 2 days later. Another top tip is don't skip the step where you check that the valve pin moves up and down when you remove the old TRV. Three of mine were stuck open and I used a squirt of WD40 and a gentle tap with a small hammer to loosen them so I could press the pin with my thumb. I ended up applying WD40 to all the valve pins while the TRVs were off. The Hive valve won't be able to control the hot water flow if the pin is stuck. One of your radiators will need to be left without a TRV (normally the one in the room with the Hive thermostat). The Hive app is pretty good and you can see the actual temperature of each valve at a glance on the dashboard but it would but great if Hive could add in the set temperature too on this display. Overall I think these are a worthwhile purchase if you are buying into the Hive ecosystem. They have definitely made everyone in our household more aware of the flow of heat around the house and the importance of shutting doors etc to keep the heat where its needed and not wasted.

interesting product that gives tighter control of home heating
Took delivery of a TRV to see if the claimed ‘control’ was what I wanted. The TRV fitted easily to my radiator and installation using the Hive App worked without a hitch. The TRV paired easily and then it only needed to be calibrated. To do this I found it was necessary to have the heating on continuously for up to four hours so the TRV could calibrate itself. In reality it took around two hours. Have now set up scheduling for the TRV I am finding the unit performs as expected. I intend to purchase more of the TRVs to allow tighter control of my house heating. So far, no problems. Feb 2021 the TRV started showing signs of miss behaving. It requested doing two calibrations in one week, then finally the motor failed to operate the valve to stop the flow of water. So I was left with a useless piece of electronics. Have binned the Item and refitted my old Drayton head. Am disappointed with the Hive TRV, it showed promise but always fell well short of what I wanted/expected.

Pairs and works well with other Hive devices and app.
Cannot fault this trv as it paired quickly and appeared on the Hive app. Actioned it with a Hive motion sensor without problem. In dining room boosts temperature when presence detected and can either let more hot water through if heating is on. There is an option to turn the boiler on if heating is off but that would heat the rest of the house if the Hive Thermostat is satisfied. Despite the Hive Receiver going wrong and not working with the Thermostat, the trv and sensor were still online and working on the app and control the trv state. Unfortunately, calling for heating did not work because the Receiver was down. When a new Receiver was fitted, the trv and motion sensor automatically connected to it. Apart from the cost, I must recommended this device.

Many difficulties & substandard customer support
I bought 10 of these valves. Installation was fairly simple to start with although one failed to pair. Finally managed to pair it after many attempts. The rest of them paired fine but I got into more issues when it came to calibrating them. One of them failed to calibrate at all. I tried everything, checked the pin, used WD40 to loosen it, removed, reset, re-paired, re-calibrated. But nothing worked. Another valve kept getting an E6 error. Tried many times to remove, reset etc but the same kept happening. Another radiator seemed to calibrate fine and was working for a while but then started heating up when it was set to off (if other radiators were set to on). Spending so much time every day trying to calibrate the radiators meant that my heating was on pretty much constantly for days which has cost me a FORTUNE in energy (at a time when energy bills are high enough as it is - and defeats the object of buying them as my main reason was to try to save energy a little bit as well as having a bit more control over how I heat my home - neither of which I was able to achieve with them). I also have issues with the app when it comes to the radiator valves. I enabled Heat on Demand but the app is very buggy and sometimes it shows that HOD is enabled and other times it didn’t disappeared. The app is very clunky and not very customisable. No grouping of valves so you have to have a separate schedule for each individual radiator. There is also a bug with Actions in that if you set up an action to boost a radiator or a couple of radiators, it boosts them but sets the temperature really low so they don’t heat up. Overall the app is in dire need of a revamp (or rather being rewritten from the ground up). I’m not sure if the majority of the issues I experienced are due to the products or the app itself but either way, they need to do some serious work if they want to remain competitive with other brands. When it came to customer support, I spoke to one person on the phone who was rather dismissive and seemed like she couldn’t wait to get me off the phone. She said she’d done something to fix my issue (something about connecting my valves to the server) and told me to try calibrating again. Which I did. I then asked for more help after the calibration didn’t work (again) via the email she sent me, I got no response (still no response a week after I originally contacted them - I doubt I’ll ever hear back). Hive’s online chat never seems to be available and I ended up resorting to twitter to get help. This worked but it still took them 2 days to get back to me after my first reply. By which time I decided that I was sending the whole lot back so that I can use the money to buy another brand. Hive really need to sort out their customer services. Awaiting a refund before I can buy a replacement.

I Had Doubts, But Absolutely No Complaints
Reviews on the Hive TRV are mostly good, but there are some that say they are unreliable or not worth the money. Because of that, I waited 3 months to post this review. All I can say is this. The 4 valves were a 5 minute job to install, with the only tricky one being where access to the radiator valve is slightly restricted, and it needed nimble fingers to get it threaded on efficiently. Otherwise, it's an easy swap for an existing TRV. Setting them up in the Hive app was also a doddle. Connection was almost instant on all 4 valves, despite one being the opposite corner of the house from the router, and tucked in a corner. The longest part of the job was setting up the schedules for each radiator but once done, they have only needed minor adjustments since then. The effect has been really noticeable. If a radiator comes on, and the room reaches temperature quickly, it just goes off again. If we have the fire on in the living room, the radiators in there don't even come on at all. Rather than heat the whole house from early evening, the bedrooms are set to come on much later, rather than pointlessly heating them for hours, with nobody in them. It simply has to be more efficient than every radiator in the house being on at the same time. Is there potential for a saving, given the cost of the valves? If say there has to be. A one time payment, with lower monthly bills, is definitely my preferred way of doing things. As for complaints about the noise, I have to wonder what people are hearing. There is a quiet mechanical whirring, as the valves open and close, but you don't even hear them most of the time. All in all, I can find nothing to suggest the Hive TRV is not a very useful addition to any house.

The curry’s egg
We live in a house with 16 radiators. I purchased 5 of these TRV to test them in our lounge, main bedroom, dining room and office. Setup and calibration was relatively easy and despite some small issues, mainly to do with the app, we were ready to go. One of the things I did at the start was to make sure that the valves were operating smoothly and was expecting a good outcome; lubricating each one as necessary. Sadly we have been disappointed, the TRV controlling the valves open and close very slowly and therefore warm some rooms after 40 minutes of calling for heat and similarly completely different valves close a similar time later. This results in rooms being cold at the start and then being too warm after you no longer need the heat; when the valve finally closes the radiator is full of hot water. Basically they are unpredictable and slow to respond and the TRV which responds quickly to open may take ages to close and vice versa with other valves. I have to say that manual TRV’s and the Hive hub worked pretty good, but with my wife being a home worker, I purchased these TRV to ensure that her office was warm during the day and we could control either on demand or on a scheduled timer to save us having to walk around the house manually turning valves up or down. I don’t see them as a significant enhancement over the hub on its own. We like the heat on demand function, as it is good, particularly if you are away and want to warm a room for when you return. Similarly, if we are going out, we have quick actions to switch everything down to a lower setting. Now onto savings generated. Our bills have gone the other way! It is on that basis that we have decided to set the thermostat controllers to be triggered and cut off at a far lower heat than we initially set and also to set the on time earlier when using the schedule function. To compensate, we ADJUST THE TRV to cease heating earlier, but is very much based on a radiator by radiator basis - the response differs from Hive TRB to Hive TRV. We even switched them to different radiators to determine if it was the radiator valve and it wasn’t. One of the issues with all TRV is that they only operate to respond to temperature, so if your TRV are low to the ground, you have to wait until the temperature is achieved which can make the room very hot. It almost seems that you have to monitor each valve and tailor the individual TRVwhich is time consuming and has cost us dearly. What is amazing is that some TRV take so long to respond, the temperature on the TRV is 4c in temperature over the temeperature we set them to close! With hindsight I wouldn’t bother with this product but in a busy household with lots of rooms we wanted to enhance control from a single control source. The hub is great, the app, particularly the beta app is flaky and these TRV need loads of fine tuning to work well.
