This edition is for an older version of the software and All the links I came across are no longer active...So I ALSO purchased the SECOND EDITION.I like how Michael Brightman teaches. it's logical and easy for me to grasp. I will be signing up for his self paced course that he has too. I think of this book as the text book for the course.

I have been using sketchup for almost 6 years now. This is my 8th or 9th book purchase to learn sketchup as best I can.. I meant to purchase this book upon its release and now I'm kicking myself for procrastinating. So, if you are in two minds on making your own purchase don't procrastinate, place your order today.The book starts with a hefty promise: to "elevate your sketchup skill and design workflow to the highest radical extremes of efficiency" and it delivers on this promise - in spades and then some.Chapter's 1,2 & 4 were pretty straight forward and would be invaluable to a beginner. For me the book really began to deliver on its promise from chapter three and especially chapter 5 and onward.The author starts by getting you organized, not just in SketchUp and layout, but first on your computer by dictating how and where to download files and provides a great organizational structure for project management. How many times have you saved a project file as "Project xyz final" only to have that revised and saved as final version 2, or Final final V3?. I thought I already had a pretty good project management file structure... now it's even better.In chapters 5 & 6 the author imparts a strict regimen that will enable one to use scenes not just as a presentation of images for a project, but as a powerful tool in itself, to save you time and maximize the efficiencies that are inherent in SketchUp. (if only we knew).Within hours of reading these chapters I had set up my own regimen incorporating most of the methods outlined to add to my own templates. I now feel more in control than ever before and the time I will save in the future will be considerable, due to the improved workflows that Michael clearly and succinctly explains in his book.The layout chapters (9-13) were also very well explained and would be an awesome introduction for beginner and intermediate users, who wish to turn 3D models into 2D and 3D construction documents.The entire book is very well written. It explains many of the settings one should set up that are normally overlooked , even if you have been using SketchUp for many years.. There's just a lot of stuff you don't know, you don't know. The books strengths are in clearly communicating very detailed settings to explain the guts of SketchUp tools and dialogue settings, so you use them properly and efficiently to not only just work faster, but to also communicate ideas, concepts, and construction documents to a greater intensity and clarity. The book has lots of images with very specific details for setting up SketchUp, on almost every single page. The only improvement I would suggest for later editions is to make those images a little larger. The highlighted in blue tips were also a nice touch. and the accompanying tutorials and additional data available on his website are a godsend and invaluable to haveLong live Sketchup - It rocks. I've only flipped over the many pages and read some of them but already I am convinced enough to buy Sketchup Pro at last. Sketchup is very, very powerful but not really optimised for the kind of architectural work I do. This book shows methods and processes useful for buildings architecture and after many years of wondering if the investment (learning time, mainly) would be worth it or just a dead end, I am now convinced that Sketchup can be a great supplement to our main 3D CAD software. Superb book. Will keep me busy learning for many months!

it is a great book, to begin learning. That said, I found that most of its value is not rally in the "sketchup" techniques, it is mostly helpful in helping you set an organized project, from conception to documentation. It has some flaws, some critical flaws for people who only buy the book and think that, they will get everything out of it, and the truth is, you have to do some further inquiring, because some of the exercises and examples are not done properly. The author in one of the referenced videos explains it better, so and he even said that he made some mistakes in the book, which are explained better in the videos. Another problem is that most of this stuff was done in a previous version so some things change a little, so once again you have to do a little more pocking and prodding within the software to get the desired results. Overall I am truly pleased and would deffinetly recommend the book to other people.

This is an excellent strategical guide for users of SketchUp who are interested, not only in architectural design but, any kind of design where measured drawings must be made. Michael Brightman explains why you need to prepare certain kinds of scenes, styles and a carefully organized layer structure, so that these can be conjugated to really leverage or plum the depths of SketchUp and Layout. It is a very impressive overview and system of getting the most out of the programs. Easy to understand and fun to read, some of the most important basic commands are also thoroughly explained. The book is also beautifully illustrated in color. If you are interested in SketchUp and Layout, then this is a must buy! I bought this book two weeks ago and it has already become my new bible on how and especially why you should do certain things in SketchUp.
