Makes Pencils Sharp
This pencil sharpener is excellent. It makes your pencils very sharp and is large enough to store the pencil shavings yet small enough to be easily portable. Itโs easy to open and clean. Itโs has a nice blue color. Itโs a hand sharpener with no battery which means you have to sharpen the pencil by inserting it into the pencil sharpener and twisting your pencil by hand.

First class sharpener
This handheld pencil sharpener is top notch and manually puts an excellent point on pencils. I bought o e for my young grandsons and was so impressed that I bought one for myself. Handy product and handy size!

Sharpens
Itโs a pencil sharpener, gets the job done. Not electric manual, but how hard is it to sharpen a pencil.

Sharpener ๐ Packaging ๐ซฃ
I have to deduct one star because of the horrendous package handling, now, this may not be Staedtlers fault directly, Amazons fulfillment centers could have played a part in this as well, either way, what a joke for packaging. The little bucket also came with a few scratches on it. Anyways. The sharpener however, does work well. I sharpened a pencil that hasnโt been sharpened in over 5years and it was brought to a perfect point. Overall a great sharpening experience, however the packaging just disappoints me.

Absolute Best Manual Sharpener
I have bought this sharpener twice because it is my absolute favorite. I typically buy electrical sharpeners because I normally don't have much luck with the manual ones. I have tried cheap ones meant for school kids to expensive ones meant for high end colored pencils, and none of them could sharpen to a perfectly sharp point without breaking the lead in the process. Now this one...I can get incredibly sharp points on all my pencils, including colored pencils and watercolors. The key is to sharpen to the point where you don't break off the tip the first time you try to write with it. For softer leads, like watercolor, I tend to under-sharpen but it's still very sharp. Also, it doesn't take many turns at all to get a sharp point. Much less than you would expect. Once a pencil has a point, I usually only have to turn it once or twice in the sharpener to bring it back to a perfectly sharp point. I was so happy with how it sharpened my pencils that I ended up sharpening a whole pack of them at once. I've had my first one for probably a year now and it's in constant use and still as perfect as when I first bought it.Pros:- Perfectly sharp point on every single kind of pencil- Easy to use and turn pencils while sharpening- One or two turns is all it takes to get a dull pencil sharp- Sharpener can hold quite a few shavings before needing to be emptiesCons- Pencil can be sharpened to a very fine point and may break when used to write (this is more of a pay attention and don't go past a certain point that you know your lead will surely break)- Somewhat pricey for a single sharpener (but since it works every single time unlike cheaper manual sharpeners...definitely worth the cost!)

Works well
It works great. I ordered it for my son to sharpen his colored pencils that he used for adult coloring books.

Great! Sharper than electrics. It's pricey and you can NOT chose COLOR. You get one only.
Great! Sharper than electrics. It's pricey and you can NOT chose COLOR. You get ONE only.Don't think, buy. Overlook the above annoyances of price per unit and color options, because it's life changing. Like a good pencil BAG. ( I'm on my 3rd pencil bag this semester. I keep losing them. )Note: if this was cheaper just a little cheaper I'd buy more of them. As it is, I'm buying another 3 sharpeners. Prince has been hanging firm at the square root of sixteen dollars since the summer. When I am in the ZONE with math or science (probably anything, I only take science and math), i need one always in reach. If you told me to chose between a calculator or a pencil sharpener on a test (idea being i'd still be able to write with the single pencil but it would be dull.) I would chose the pencil sharpener, pretty sure. Yes I would. And this would be the one!Other essentials:Here's my back to school shopping list. Get 3 times the notebooks and 3 times the pencils listed below. Should keep you for ONE semester only, then buy more pencils and spirals. Two pencil bags (different colors) and a pencil sharpener (nobody cares about color unless you want to keep track of who's is who's, so I do care. (Get a bright bag, so you can find it easily in your backpack.)Add some sticky notes to mark pages in books and note books and you will make the ragged test taking, diploma seeking, strung out all night student studier happy and productive. If that person is ypurself then all the better.(Don't forget to write your name and phone number on the pencil bag!)REMEMBER: Pencil bag, Pencils, Sharpener, Notebooks... and done. If you need a backpack grab a Jan sport Big Student. They are BIG and reasonably priced. BIG is key here. Need to fit lots of books and spiral notebooks. And folders. Yes you will need some folders. I do not have a suggestion for that. But here are the four things I mentioned and I HIGHLY recommend.Spirals:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001E6C08E/ref=crt_ewc_img_dp_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DERPencil Bag:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F2S2YG7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A2KYRCU2XBNR0X&psc=1Sharpener: (this one)https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D2PTCH8/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DERPencils (Ticonderoga, no other)https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006CSPZK4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

No Longer Made In Germany (2024)
I have had several of these in the past, and for a very reasonable price they did an excellent job of sharpening both standard and colored pencils. Due to Amazon's policy, even it being a prime option it is not eligible for return. They will issue you a refund if you get one that doesn't meet your standards. The one I got was a purple color and came in Staedtler paper/plastic package and so I am assuming that now all of this model, the 51163, are no longer made in Germany and are now manufactured in China as is stated plainly on the package. (I suppose it is possible that other colors are made in Germany, but I'm not going to bother trying random orders to see if I get one from Germany.)Once I was issued a refund, they basically gave it to me for free, I decided to try it out, and this one was acceptable. Compared to the red one made in Germany though, the sharpening wasn't even all around and the point kept breaking off immediately even though it appeared to be as sharp and sturdy as the result from the red one. It also didn't feel as clean while turning/shaving as the red one from Germany. It probably deserves a 3 star except that they hide the information about where it is manufactured and they switched it to China and it is not the same superior standard as before. So I'm dingeing them a star for questionable marketing/manufacturing practices. This leads me to question Staedtler overall and i will be very careful to only buy something from them if it can be verified where it is made before purchase. If anyone wants a superior quality sharpener still made in Germany and considered by some to be the world's best, try KUM sharpeners.
