Does it have auto depth adjustment

I'm not sure but there is a small wheel on the left side that might adjust the depth. I don't dare to try it because mine is set perfectly at the moment. The wheel has an arrow up and down so I'm thinking it might be this.

Will this punch a portfolio that measuers 113/4 in legenth?

It will NOT punch 11 3/4" long media. The slot will only hold up to 11 3/8" long paper. Also, the punch will not be centered at that length. It will have 3/8" from one side to the first slot and 4/8" (1/2") from the other side to the last slot... you cannot center it exactly.

Can this machine bind books of differing page size, say 1/2 letter size of 8-1/2 X 5-1/2? I assume you just cut the combs down to the size you need?

Yes. They can do smaller sizes, and yes they would have to cut the combs down to size... Also they would need to try to get the paper aligned to cut the holes in the proper place though.

Is it a two step process? Do you have to punch first, set punched papers aside for aligning or can you put the comb on and stack on the comb while punching?

It is a two step process. First you punch the holes and then you align the papers and put the comb on.
