Can you tell the water level by looking at it? It appears to be solid but is it opaque?

As others have said, in good lighting you can see the water level. But I put a bright orange piece of plastic in it so I can tell better because it floats.

i read a review that said you had to push the spring to get it to fill up the bowl? is this correct? i wanted something that was automatic

There's no need to "push the spring" on this canister if there is water in the plastic canister. The bowl should fill up automatically and will stop filling once the stainless steel container is full of water. Once the plastic canister is full of water, check the black lid to be sure the O-ring is in place and the lid is secured correctly on the canister before tipping it over to let water flow into the bowl. We love this water station and have had no issues with it whatsoever. It fills perfectly. I also love the fact that I can thoroughly clean the stainless steel bowl in between fills as my dog can get it pretty dirty, and the canister itself is easy to fill.

What is the diameter of the small size bowl. I have persians who stick their face in the bowl so I need a small bowl

I purchased the medium size for our dogs and found the bowl size to be smaller than I had expected. It is 4 3/4" in diameter and just under 2" deep. So, my guess would be that the small size would work well for cats. It is nice that the stainless steel bowl is removable for cleaning . Nice product.

How do you go about cleaning the reservoir? It appears that the top part unscrews. Can you fit your hand in the reservoir to do a thorough cleaning?

I can easily fit my average female hand in the reservoir to clean mine.
