Greater Value than Expected
I recently purchased a piece of property on a shallow lake. It is a very quiet community, so I thought an electric trolling motor would be appropriate for just cruising along the lake. I read several reviews done by others on this Newport product, and watched videos that were posted showing the motor in action. I have to say that I am beyond impressed with what I purchased. I chose the 62 lb thrust motor since it can be used on various size boats. I have a 12' StarCraft rowboat that is an older and well-constructed boat. That means it has some weight to it. I was able to cruise along through the weedy places with no trouble at all. A very clever design feature is the adjustable collar that allow the motor to be raised or lowered depending upon the depth from the floor to the propeller. Once I was in open water, I selected the highest speed and was amazed at how very well it moved me along. It will be put to a full test next week when my wife and 3 others will be using the boat. The weight of the motor is great in that it is light enough for my wife to carry it without hurting her shoulder. This was another selling point. It installs in seconds which mean no heavy lifting for a long period of time.. I have only one major concern that I experienced that could easily be remedied with a design modification. The forward and reverse motion is controlled by a twist of the handle. If you install the motor and accidentally have the motor in any of the power settings before you hook up the battery, the motor will turn and you could get injured. Yes, common sense would demand that the battery no be hooked up until the motor is in the water, but the potential for injury does exist. Perhaps they can incorporate a safety switch that interrupts the power going to the motor. I purchased a deep cycle lithium battery to power the motor. I ran for about a couple of miles at full speed and measured the voltage at the battery after I finished the run. The power loss was only a .01 drop from the 12.8 volts. There is a built in battery level series of LED's that tell you at a glance how much power you have left. This is a testimony to not only the quality of the battery, but also to the low amp draw of the motor. It is very efficient. It is very well made and I expect many years of use out of this unit. There are replacement parts available which is encouraging. Final word, for the price you will not find a better motor that has all the features of those that are priced much, much higher. I expect Newport to be around a while.

Not what I expected.
I upgraded from a 36 foot thrust to this, hoping to get a little more speed. I got about one mile an hour faster. So I guess I did get a little more. I tried different angles and depths. But 5 mph was as fast as I could get it. Having said that, I am mostly satisfied with the purchase. It seems well made. Not as noisy as my old one. Nice thick, insulated cables. I like the battery indicator as well.

Donโt purchase returned items from Amazon
I purchased this Amazon slightly discounted item believing the Amazon story that it was in very good condition. When i opened the beat up shipping box the first thing I noticed was that the three blade prop was damaged and not usable. Also the prop nut was missing and the prop shaft showed signs of leakage or was it corrosion at the motor shaft seal. The screw device holding the shaft up did not work. I hooked up the power cables correctly to a fully charged 12v battery and the motor would not turn in fwd or reverse. Unhooked cables pushed reset on breaker reconnected cables, still nothing! NOT HAPPY! Returned to Amazon for a refund, Ordered a new one. Apparently buying an amazon return is a scam. 1 Star because delivery was as advertised. Waiting on full refundโฆ

Good motor, bad service
Motor shipped and arrived quickly. This motor comes mostly assembled, you only need to attach the prop with the included hardware and tool. I put it together and had it ready in a couple of minutes. The first time I tried to use it I realized it was missing a nut for the screw holding the head to the shaft, so I called Newport vessels customer service thinking this was just a simple nut and they would stick one in an envelope and we'd be good to go. I couldn't have been more wrong. On the phone they couldn't understand the part I was looking for until I pulled up the manual along with them and pointed out that it was item 13 on the part list. Even then, they had to research the part and call me back a few days later. To my surprise, they wanted me to pay for the part (a few bucks) AND another $6.95 for shipping and handling! Ten freaking dollars for a brand new motor missing a nut? Are you freaking kidding me? Anyway, back to the motor.... I have taken it out on the lake a few times now and am overall pleased with the performance of this motor on my 14 foot Duroboat. At the highest speed it moves the boat very nicely, and trolls on speed 1 and 2 nicely. The shaft length is a bit longer than I need, but from other reviews it and looking at it, it seems like a simple task to shorten it a bit. The cables could be a bit longer, but I ended up moving my battery to the front of the boat as I also have a gas motor and tank in the back end of the boat already. Overall I am pleased with the motor itself, but dread the thought of needing any further customer service. Would have given 5 stars if not for that.

Great little motor.
Great little motor. We use this to cruise around the lake on our floating dock. Easy to mount/unmount. When connected to a marine battery, it lasts all day.

As far happy with purchase
Really powers canoe around. But battery life read out is not correct ๐. Would not rely on it you could be doing a lot of padding. Or bring extra battery.

Worked great on a homemade boat
Used it on our homemade boat and it was much more efficient and faster than previous motor. We built a picnic/floating table and added the motor to spice things up and tour our lake.

Quality
I bought 62lb of thrust and have 12v 200amp lithium iron phosphate can handle 200amp discharge I might have to send back if I can't use battery it has more then enough power I can understand even a 60 amp battery has 120 amp discharge max this motor can not take more then 58amps and has 60 amp breaker I put 3 stars if I can't use lithium iron phosphate the safest battery yet I just update you can use lithium iron phosphate voltage can't be over 13.5 a fully charged life04 floot at 14.4 but when off charger is goes to 13.6 is normal so I changeing star rating we will see will give update
