It's a low budget radio
I purchased this unit 3 months ago for my 14' skiff. I paired it with a cobra 5' Fiberglas antenna.LIKES-I can receive transmissions from 50 or so miles away. San Diego to Catalina.-speaker is plenty loud.-worksDISLIKE-automatically tries sending out distress signal on channel 16 after a few minutes of being on, unless I hit clear button when it starts beeping. My GPS doesn't support DSC. So maybe that's why the radio does this.-Recess mounting is a challenging DIY project.-The original picture in the listing was a model with buttons on the mic. The 380 only has the PTT button. Wrong picture.-when changing channels the numbers get very small and hard to read.-I wouldn't recommend this unit. If you don't plan on hooking it up to your GPS unit. The beeping and constantly having to press the clear button is annoying to the point I just shut it off sometimes.UPDATE: The unit didn’t make it a year. I called for a radio check last weekend with no responses. Checked channel 27 free call back radio check in San Diego just to hear what I was putting out and it was very faint. I was transmitting in the high power not the 1 Watt setting. I’m replacing it with a Lowrance Link-8 for AIS added safety.

Could not get it to work.
I purchased and installed the radio. It powered up, scanned channels, and did everything it was supposed to except receive and transmit a signal. I re-did the antenna connection 3 times and tried another antenna, but it still wouldn’t transmit. I sold the boat before I ever got it to work.

except...
I missed the part that I can't replace the mic; it's molded in, not screwed on, like my previous, ancient radio. Also, I need to solder in a connection for an external speaker. It's kind of ok, because the RAM mic--or whatever it's called, the speaker in the mic--is very loud and clear. I have the unit in the cabin of my sailboat and usually keep the speaker outside but I don't think it'll be necessary.Installation was super easy, as far as hooking up the power and antenna. Haven't hooked it to the gps yet...

As expected. Flush mounted looks great
Fast delivery--had it fully installed less than 24 hours after ordering. I did want to flush mount it in the same hole my old radio used but couldn't find dimensions anywhere. 2.95"H x 6.57"W x 5.08"D according to the box. After modifying the old radio's mounting sleeve, i was able to fit this one. Works loud and clear.

Above average full-featured VHF for below average money.
For the money, it is hard to beat, but some would prefer a large print individual channel display when scrolling as opposed to the scolling small print list. A crew member commented on this to me so I am passing it along.

Font is too small in the display
Display Font is too small when changing channels. The acquired channel displays fine and is large but changing the channel displays a list of channels which are very small, Too Small to make selection accurately.

good radio
I bought this and mounted it under the Icom radio. Being much newer, it has more bells and whistles on it including a connection to mu GPS. I now usr it as a primary and the Icom as a backup.

No flush mount and poorly designed clip
Overall this is a good radio and a good price. It doesn't come with a flush mount, though, and Uniden doesn't make a frame style flush mount for it. The only mount they make for this radio is a pair of universal metal ears. So, if you're replacing on old radio with this one or don't cut the hole to the exact size of the radio you're **** out of luck.Less than a year later and the plastic button that holds the handset in the clip broke off. This VHF is pretty much used in flat clam water and we handle it very gently. The part isn't available online and every support number I've called I've waited on hold forever. I'm just going to go to a hardware store and fix it myself even though it's still under warranty. That easier than replacing it with the same poorly designed part or dealing with their non existent support.

Nice unit, works perfectly well
Nice unit, works perfectly well, as advertised. The instructions don't say, but I had to connect BOTH VHF black and bare wires to the GPS ground wire, plus green to yellow and red to power, for the VHF to receive position data from the GPS. That's the only thing I can mention. Works well, good sound and there is absolutely no background noise. Perfect.
