A Handweaver's Pattern Book

Review for "A Handweaver's Pattern Book"
I am a beginner at loom weaving. This book was suggested by several experienced weavers as a "must". I am studying it, but think I will need some more experience before I will be able to do it justice! May take me some time, but I will do it!

Great solution and replacement for the expensive used Green book
The Green book is the standard for 4 shaft weaving patterns. This is not the "Green Book" . If you want to have a copy of that book look for it used. I can't imagine why the publisher decided to abridge this book I'm sure to save paper cost etc. Who knows? A word to them if they reed the reviews of their product. Considering what the green book sells for do a total reprint unabridged version of the green book. Sell more and make more money. Now for the book as it is. This is a must have for anyone weaving on a 4+shaft loom. Easy to follow. good drafts.Old in style( could use a little up dating) I guess the publisher is not interested in this title.Buy the book over look the flaws and happy weaving

Good but not all there
It does not contain all the pages of the original book. It’s really nice and useful if you want give the drafts a go, no doubt. An online course I had mentioned a pattern on a higher number led page than I had. Still very useful and affordable. Try a local guild for the earlier versions with hardcover for the complete set of drafts

Wonderful addition to any multishaft weaver’s library
I am so glad I sprung for this book, it has inspired me to design many pieces. I love casually thumbing through it as well, just studying structures and drafts. Love the small write ups that divide sections by structure. The hand drawn drafts are appreciated precisely because they are done by hand, it feels as if I’ve got a personal family heirloom or treasure in my hands.

USE CAUTION: 2 different books listed in one listing.
I completely agree with other reviewers, that this book is a must have for every weaver, BUT ...I was looking for the revised edition of this book. Amazon listing for revised edition offered 2 options: hardcover and paperback. As I clicked paperback it changed the edition without any warning and I ended up ordering the 2014 reprint (the one with red cover) of A Handweaver's Pattern Book, its original edition. That is a totally different book. For comparison, 2014 reprint, or this (red) book only has 142 pages as opposed to 217 pages in the revised (green) version; entire chapters are missing in the red book and those chapters that match the ones in the green book, list fewer patterns. I didn't have time to count the total number of patterns in both editions, just by my estimate: red book has less then half of the patterns included in the green book. Even the format of the red book is very unpleasant: the figures, and drafts are much smaller than in the green edition, often times too uncomfortable to read.Quite confusingly, Amazon decided to put both these books into the same listing, but they are entirely different books. I notified them of the fact, but they merely added the picture of 2014 paperback edition while still not changing the listing.SUMMARY: If you are looking to purchase this handweaver's classic, stay clear of red cover 2014 edition and make sure you are ordering a revised edition, published in 1950 (the one with green cover).

One for the Ages
The is the one book a beginning weaver should have to explore the many, many beautiful designs possible with a 4-harness loom. The original hardback version was "precious" in that a person would take so much care with it, it couldn't be marked in or annotated without guilt. This paperback version is handy, note-taking worthy, and a great price. You will also benefit from the personal touch the notes and the organization of the material gives the exploration.

Not the “green book”
I lost my copy of the green handweaver’s pattern book and couldn’t get another because everyone selling a copy has gone insane and is charging over 100$ for a 20$ book. I thought that this was supposed to be a reprint but the pages are wrong, the format is not the same and patterns are missing. I page through it and it feels like it’s the wrong book. I don’t really understand why they wouldn’t print the whole book but it’s not that great anymore. I wouldn’t bother because there are better books out there, the original was much better. Why you would abridge a weaving pattern book is beyond me but that’s what this seems to be. So buyer beware.

Finally, a new edition of the old standard.
This is a reprint of a very old book that has for too long been out of print. I was very glad to find that is now available. I have an old copy, which I use frequently and bought this copy for a friend who had not been able to find a good copy of the original without spending twice the price.

excellent
very good and informative book, pleasant to use. A lot of very interesting patterns, even if some of them are written a little bit small

Good book, but printed patterns to small
Great weaving patterns, but they are too small to read clearly. The print quality is very poor.

Pattern photos look distorted
This is the first item I've received from Amazon that I'm disappointed in. It is A Weavers Pattern Book by Marguerite P Davison.I chose the soft cover version, it was cheaper. The pictures of the weaving patterns are not clear. They look like pale photocopied photos.
