Great Help When You Need It--This Version is STURDY!
This funny-looking thing is a PRICELESS tool for helping people who need it, get in and out of a vehicle with an "extra hand." I read through reviews for multiple manufacturer's offerings on these "Gitter Uppers" and settled on this one after seeing multiple references to its better quality. I'm glad I did--I'm very pleased with the heft, strength, quality, & design of this handy device. I need it for my husband, who's having a bit of a challenge fitting his 6'3" frame into a tiny Fiat 500--he says he doesn't know why I didn't get a SMALLER car : ) This handle helps a LOT--you basically just slip the metal part into the door frame's metal hook (look at your car--you'll see it). The design of the metal on this one lets it fit securely in place without slipping backwards, thanks to the scalloped edging near the handle. We've found that hubby can position it either pointing FORWARD or off to the side (pointing OUTWARD). Either way works great and gives him a little something to push against when climbing out of my Clown Car. He stores it beside the seat for easy access & can easily slip it in place once the door's open. The biggest design advantage of this particular model seems to be its heavy design--the metal support inside the handle seems to run the full length of the device. When I read through other reviews, some reviewers complained that a competing (cheaper) model had a very short metal body with a plastic handle--when much pressure was put on those models, the handles broke, rendering them useless. It doesn't look or feel like that will EVER happen with this one--it's sturdy and strong & the outer covering is a comfortable, slightly soft rubberized material--it's impressed me with its function & high quality. I trust it will serve its purpose for years to come. Most highly recommended! P.S. This also has a built-in seat belt cutter (look at the photo--it's the slit where the white teardrop is) & the metal's strong enough to use as a glass breaker, if you ever need it. A+ in my book!

simple but very effective
To be honest, I half thought this might be a waste of money. Still, mom is in her late 80s and has trouble boosting herself out of the car. I watched as she placed her right hand in the door frame and shuddered to think what might happen if the door closed on it. Hence, I was willing to take a chance. This one paid off. Yes, you do need to get far enough forward to use arm leverage to boost yourself up. But that's true no matter what you are grabbing. This is handy, at a great height and insures that the door won't slam shut. I never actually tried to slam the door on it and doing so might ruin the handle, but I'd rather buy a new gizmo than have mom go through hand surgery. Suggest storing it between seat and door for easy access (it also has a seat belt cutter and window breaking hammer point for emergencies) -- putting it in the glove compartment is a little awkward since it is a good size and might be unreachable in an emergency. If you are buying this for an older person, show them how to place it in the door hook so it is stable (handle should be perpendicular to side of car, not at an acute angle). If someone puts it in off square, it might jiggle a bit when they grab it and frighten them. My only regret: why didn't I think of this? UPDATE: after 4 weeks, mom is loving this. She feels a little more self-sufficient and appreciates that.

Great product - makes getting out of the car so much easier
I bought this for my mother-in-law who has some joint issues which makes it even harder to get in and out of sedans (lower cars). She was not very excited to get a "helper" gift, but she appreciated how helpful it really was. The handle is a little heavy and large for easy carrying around. (she doesn't carry a large purse) We decided the easiest thing would be to leave the handle in the car because she needs it mostly to get out of the car, not into the car. She is leaving it in her center console cubby so she has easy access to it when she exists the car and then drops it into the seat before she walks away. When she returns, she picks up the handle before she slides into the seat and puts it away in the console. It is sturdy and easy to use and provides that extra needed hand to climb out. This is a great product and I'm glad I took a chance to try it out. When she slides it into bar on the side of the vehicle, it provides a very sturdy and non moving grab bar for support. It doesn't wiggle around or feel like it could slip or break. It is easy to insert and remove. Great product. I don't know how much the "safety" features will be used. They seem fine but it isn't what we bought it for.

I've tried several different door handles, and this is the best one!
Due to an injury about four years ago, I began requiring assistance to get in and out of my truck, as well as any other vehicles I was riding in. I got to the point where I needed help all the time, as I was no longer able to drive and yet still needed to be able to access vehicles for rides. I was able to find an assistive car handle device online through Amazon, note the smaller red handle in the pictures, and it served its purpose for quite some time. I was able to get in and out of vehicles with greater ease, as I was given more leverage and a handhold to enter and exit. I then switched to the longer support bar in the pictures, the Stander HandyBar. I have been thrilled with this handle. Finally, I had heard of the handles now being equipped with lights, so I was eager to try one out and evaluate it against the other two I have. I have also now tried all three devices, and I will share comparisons of each and my experiences. The biggest problem I had with the smallest red one was that the handle was not molded onto the aluminum bar and 'hook'. The other issue was the length of it: it was too short and didn't provide sufficient purchase when I would lean on it or grab it. The final straw for me was when I was using it during the summer, and the heat caused the rubber grip to slide off when I went to lean on it, and I slipped and hit my head on the inside of the car door's frame. The HandyBar’s handle is long, strong, and the rubber is molded onto the aluminum handle. There is a seatbelt blade, and it is solid and fortunately, I haven't had to use it, aside from just checking the sharpness of the blade. I have dropped this handle a countless number of times, and the only sign of wear is on the aluminum 'hook' part of the handle. This handle is used all the time, by myself and now by my father. The only two things with which I have an issue with are the aluminum hook showing a lot of wear, and second, the glass breaker tip is a separate piece from the aluminum hook. The Mytium Car Door Handle is an aluminum bar that has a plastic housing at the head of the 'hook' for the batteries and the light. The instructions state that two (2) number 7's are to be used, and honestly, I had no idea which type of battery that was; they are AA's, by the way. The battery cover was easy to remove and reinstall, but it doesn't feel very secure. After using it several times this week, I must routinely push on the cover, so it doesn't fall completely out and off. The light turns on when the button is pushed, but it requires a firm push to turn it on. The handle is very comfortable in the hand, as it is an open celled foam that compresses mildly. The foam is just as wide as the palm of my hand. The end cap is where the seat belt blade is installed, and the manufacturer thought ahead to install a protective cover on the blade, just as they did, as well with the glass breaker tip. The problem with the plastic end cap is that it flexes when I use it, such that I fear that it may break during use, since it is a two-piece product held together by two small screws. On this handle, note that the tip is integral to the 'hook', and thus, there's no need to worry about it falling off. The hook and tip do not show signs of any use or wear, notwithstanding the frequency of its use this week. I liked the angle of the downward 'hook' compared to the others I have, which aside from the light, was the feature that intrigued me most. It is a very good handle that I know will continue to service me well. That is at least until I accidentally drop it, or it falls. With the amount of plastic on the handle, it will not take much for it to break, wherein it could be sharp and potentially dangerous for me, especially since I take blood thinners. Another concern I have with it falling, aside from the end cap also breaking, is the damage that may occur to the foam handle. All three handles are effective and provide much relief and assistance for me. I am frequently asked by people with whom I am driving, as well as passersbys where I got the handles and which I like the most and why. While I enjoy the new Mytium Car Door Handle, especially with the extra assistive strap handle they provided in the box, it is the most expensive handle, the HandyBar, that I prefer most because the handle is a hard rubber material that is completely cast onto the aluminum handle. Aside from the issue with the glass breaker tip that moves, and the wear seen on the ‘hook’, I feel that this assistive device will still provide the longest and most effective use.

Works with Jeep Patriot
Just tried this out today, fit fine in the Jeep Patriot latch with handle of the HandyBar facing away from the car. I did not try it facing towards the front of the car because that would not be of any use to me. It felt secure and did not wobble. It was easy to attach and take off. The grip felt comfortable in my hand. It allowed me to step out of the vehicle and not have to worry about my balance. I did not put a lot of weight on it but it looks pretty sturdy. I do not know how well the seat belt cutter works and hopefully I will never need to find out. I am happy I got this and feel better about getting out of the car.

Recommended by Physical Therapist.
The HandyBar was recommended to us by my father's physical therapist. My 90-year-old parents have a lot of difficulty getting in and out of any vehicle, so when the PT recommended this, I immediately ordered it from Amazon. Works like a charm! It gives them so much more stability as they transition from the walker or wheelchair to the car, and vice versa. It appears to be very stable as they lean on it to back onto the seat, and also gives support as they swing their legs into the car. You can position it a couple of different ways to figure out which is best for you. It is small enough to conveniently stow in my center console when not in use. UPDATE: The HandyBar worked so well for my elderly parents that when my husband had a debilitating illness, I ordered another one for him. I brought it when I picked him up as he was discharged from the hospital. It made getting him into the car so easy, that the hospital employees assisting other discharged patients all gathered around our car to ask about it. They said they would ask their bosses to order them for use by discharged patients. We even bought one for a pregnant friend, who said it was so helpful for her to get in amd out of the car. Definitely a godsend. We have one in each of our cars, and recommend them to all of our friends.

Not as useful as I hoped
The product is sturdy and I like the seat belt cutter and window breaker. It does fit but attaching to my Hyundai Sonata takes a little effort to fit securely without jiggling. Bought it for an elderly family member to aid in getting in and out of the car. it is not working as intended. The person does not find it helpful so I guess it was a bust for that reason. Why did the person find it unhelpful? I am realizing the usefulness of such devices depends completely upon how a person is used to getting into a car and the particular support needs of the person needing extra help. Placing a grip at that particular location is not helpful for the elderly person for which this device was purchased. If the gadget if placed in the direction of the door, there is not enough room for the person to get out. If it is placed the other direction (facing outward away from the door or in the same direction as the open door), it is too far away to be useful. Hope my explanation made sense.
