Does Whirlpool refrigerator calculate change/order interval by actual gallons of water dispensed (200 gallons?) or strictly by the time (6 months?)

Mine seems to actually calculate by gallon. I've had the Whirlpool refrigerator in my weekend home for 20 months, where we use less water than if we were there everyday. The change filter light just came on for the 2nd filter, so I got 10 months out of each filter, not 6.

Has anyone else had a plastic taste to the water after changing this filter? even after flushing gallons of water...

I just installed this filter a month ago on a whirlpool, water taste is great. I replaced the plastic tube that feeds the water to the refrigerator with a woven high pressure hose. You may want to consider this, hope this helps
