A long review but hope its helpful. Was skeptical when i saw the reviews. Studies have shown that perceived quality is increased by price. People will choose and prefer expensive wines and rate them better even if a switch has been made and they are actually drinking the cheaper wine. Also people tend to justify their purchases and rate them better than they are, no one wants to be seen as a fool for spending a lot and will argue that the high price is justified. This razor justifies its price for me, TOTALLY. I am a hemophiliac (if we get cut, we bleed a lot) so safety is important to me. The feather blade used with this is sharp but it seems a perfect match. You are highly unlikely to get cut. I am relatively new to DE shaving. I got a small nick with this razor and the only reason was that I rushed. ANY razor will cut you if you are foolish, this razor is very forgiving unless you throw caution to the wind you will not get cut. I love the fact that I have zero irritation with this razor, I always got razor irritation with other razors despite a good pre-shave routine (shower, lather well). Its a mild razor and you will appreciate that your face isn't itching and dry during the day. This razor will require multiple passes to get a smooth shave. But it does it well, shaving once with the beard grain and once against the grain does the trick for me and the shave is totally smooth with no feeling of stubble. Its really smooth even running fingers against the grain. The quality of this razor is exceptional, premium materials combined with excellent manufacturing processes and stringent quality controls make for a razor you will enjoy for many years. Its not as some have said a work of art, sorry I cant get emotional over a razor. Note I keep thin side burns and goatee so I cant comment on how this razor performs going over the jaw line and chin. I would definitely recommend this to anyone new to DE shaving, my only regret is that I didn't buy this first as it would have saved me a lot of money that was spent on other razors. I will not buy another razor again. About my shaving, I do realise that a good shave needs good prep, good skills and good equipment. I now enjoy my shaving since I moved away from disposables. That it does. For me it's a keeper. I get a great shave every time. It's a serious tool that does seriously good work. Plus it looks outstanding sitting there next to the sink.

Update(s) will be at the bottom. This is my first safety razor. I'm a sucker for high quality. I'd rather buy a good thing once. The box is beautiful, the razor is hefty and very well made. I like that it isn't super mechanical, because mechanical parts tend to fail. Thats why I chose this over a butterfly style safety razor. Being my first safety razor I can say: it isnt too aggressive and it isn't hard to find the right angle for shaving*. (*Update here: shaving with a fresh blade everytime makes this less of an issue, but as the blade dulls the angle definitely matters more. Razorburn like crazy and ineffective cutting.) You do have to be mindful of the angle, because it stops cutting if you aren't. Honestly, thats a very forgiving fail-safe and likely one I can use to my advantage. It'll take some practice to get really good, but it's easy to use. I typically dry shave just to edge my facial hair. It does not tug more than my old Gillete fusion 5 blade razor. In fact, it tugs less; particularly on the "soul patch" of my beard. It did feel like there might have been a slight amount of razor burn, however I was not using the feather blades included in the box. I was gifted a cheaper brand. And again, I was dry shaving. I bought the Gillette over 8 years ago, and a refill of blades since then. The blades cost more than the razor and that is by design. They want you locked in so that you spend more money long term. With this style of razor I can buy any brand of replacement blade I want or like for very cheap. The ones I was gifted were $9 for 100 blades. At this price I can afford to change the blades more often and I'm not paying $30 for 6 like the Gillette. The alternative being disposable razors. And while they are cheap and cut well (better than Gillette TBH) I don't like throwing away all that plastic. Per blade and potentially per shave over a lifetime I still think this razor will be cheaper over all. Consider I spent ~180 to get started. With 105 blades that is only $1.72 per blade. Less waste, less money, quality product, good shaves. Worth the price. Short term update: I have started using this to shave my head once a week. I love the shaves and how smooth I feel afterwards. First shave I got razor burn on the back of my neck. Not on following shaves. I have gotten a few small nicks, but none of them even hurt. I tried my old Gillette fusion to see if it was better and immediately gave myself a nasty cut. I'm sold on this safety razor now. Short term update 2: When cutting against the grain: dull blades with improper angle will give you nasty razorburn. Dull blades are a risky situation in general. I am avoiding issues by shaving with the grain using the old blade, then switching it out for a new one to cut against the grain. This gives me a closer shave, less work, and less razor burn. Tips: A good shaving soap or cream is extremely helpful for a comfortable shave. It reduces tugging and cuts cleaner. More frequent shaving reduces jamming of the blade with hair. Moisturizing (with jojoba oil) afterwards sooths any razor burn. Longterm update will follow eventually.

i got into wet shaving about 9 months ago, as i was tired of spending a load of cash on disposable cartridges. after doing a decent amount of research on amazon, i chose this feather razor, a bulk package of feather hi-stainless blades, after shave lotion, shaving soap, and pre-shave cream from proraso, a brush from tweezerman and a steel brush stand. total investment: about $75. here we are, nearly 9 months later, and i have not spent a dime on any other shaving accessories, creams, etc. i was spending $18 a month on cartridges before. needless to say, i'm pleased with the cost savings. i am also very pleased with the shave quality. after a couple bloody shaving sessions, i started to get the hang of it, and have since developed a very enjoyable and fruitful shaving habit. the inclusion of the feather razor in that habit is a big part of that. being new to wet shaving, i spent some time playing around with the razor. i would twist the butterfly mechanism closed so far that the blade would be completely bent in against the head, which did not provide a very close shave. i would twist it open to the point that the blade lay flat and loose inside the head, and the shave would tear up my rough face. eventually i settled on a position where the blade would be slightly bent, and i get a great shave each time. the razor has held up so far just fine. all the parts still function correctly, and i have not had any issues with corrosion or deterioration. all the plastic bits are still fully intact as well. i have noticed that the razor likes to collect soap scum, but with a bit of scrubbing on it once a week or so, it remains pretty clean and doesn't suffer from build-up. since this is my first razor, i cannot offer comparisons to others. however, this razor could stand to be a bit heavier. i can see how a heavier razor would offer better balance and smoother operation. my only real gripe with this razor is in the butterfly mechanism. it is very easy to adjust, to the point where it adjusts too easily. i find myself having to close it back down just a bit every few minutes, because it tends to work its way loose over time. that being said, i still definitely recommend this razor for the budget-conscious consumer. i may upgrade to something a bit heavier and more expensive after a year with this one, but i see no reason that one cannot get by with only this razor from feather. i will keep using this one as my only razor, and will probably keep it as a backup / travel razor if i do decide to upgrade next year.

I drilled through a ton of reviews on this razor from all around the internet. I have ultra sensitive skin from being on the medicine Accutane many many years ago, so I have some huge problems finding great razors that balance shave without destroying my face. I wanted to get this review started by letting everyone know that I did NOT want a razor that was too "mild," and I trusted the brand more than the nay-sayers when I decided to bite the bullet and order one. Now that that's out of the way, let's get right to it! I've tried most Merkur DE razors, and most recently came from a Merkur HD "hefty". I liked the HD, but it lacked quality after the chrome started chipping off (it has lasted me about 2 years, however). When looking for my newest razor, I had a few things I desired- precision, non-chrome plated, great balance and weight, and something that will last until I give it to my son. So I checked out the major "luxury" brands within the DE community, and this razor just begged to be bought. First glance: I read many reviews claiming it is very precise in the machining, but man, this may be one of the most precisely machined things that I've ever seen. The grip is perfect. The way the blade arcs without touching some of the assembly within the head. I am confident that I could take precision measurements of it and it would still present perfection. I am still hesitant around it, as I don't ever want to drop it or scratch the perfection that was put into this thing. So, how does it shave? Like I mentioned earlier, I have crazy sensitive skin, but I demand a great shave. I have read about one hundred reviews that claim this thing is "mild," but I want to say that it is by no means "mild." Just for reference, I only use Feather blades. It would be mild if by mild you mean "how aggressively it scrapes your face." It is perhaps the most aggressive razor I've ever used when it comes to "how aggressively it banishes hair." This razor doesn't give me razor burn at all. When I put on harsh aftershave, I don't feel the burn, yet it gets such a close shave that my face becomes reflective and silicone-smooth to the touch. I've used straight-edges in the past, and this is absolutely on par with a freshly honed and lapped blade. I want to mention, for a second, that I had to give myself about 3-4 days between shaves with the Merkurs that I've owned, because my skin would react terribly if I didn't. I've been using this Feather EVERYDAY.... that's every single day without razor-burn, rashes, ingrowns, and burn-free aftershave applications. So it's gentle on my skin, but destroys hair like a straight-edge (from my experiences). So to recap, you'll read a lot of reviews that say that this thing is "mild," but it is probably the most mild razor I've ever used if you are meaning "mild on the skin," but it's one of the most aggressive razors I've ever tried when it comes to "aggressiveness on hair." I hope this makes sense. The angle of the shave is much different than anything else I've ever tried.... I used a piece of glass and a protractor to determine the angle comparison, and the Feather is most efficient at exactly 43 degrees, while the Merkurs that I own are 30 degrees; this took a bit of adjusting on my part to get the angle right (I'm essentially ignoring a decade of instinct on the angle). The gap of the head isn't as sloppy as other DEs that I've tried, as in if you stray from the 43 degrees, you're going to very quickly diminish your shave. I personally feel that most people that claim it is "too mild" to remove hair are also using the totally wrong angle. This thing is stupid expensive, and I hard a hard time biting the bullet, but if anything ever happens to it I'll instantly buy another without hesitation. This gives me the best shave of my life, but more importantly, it doesn't destroy my face in the process.

I have several DE razors, but this seems to shave the smoothest with the least irritation. I have sensitive skin around the upper chin, and lower neck. This is the first razor I've used where it did not eliminate irritation, but greatly reduced it. Other people have stated you can't feel it shave, only hear it, not true for me. It's less effort to shave but I still feel it shave, perhaps my beard is tougher than most. Usually when I shave at 7am redness on my neck has diminished by 10-11am. With this razor it was far less redness & irritation to begin with, and was gone within 30-45 minutes. For this reason I do highly recommend the razor. It cut very well and I was able to still put a little pressure on the razor against my skin. I prefer the look of my old Edwin Jagger in heavy chrome but Feather performs better. The handle is unlikely to slip in your wet hand as the grip is extremely good. If you're new to DE shaving, just go ahead and get this razor, you'll stand a good chance of getting it anyway, save your money buying other razors and get this. My other razors that this out performs are the Merkur Futur, Edwin Jagger ( EJ is My Second Favorite) Parker super heavy weight butterfly 99R & Parker 92R. The Feather out performs them all. The Parkers allow the sharp edge of the razor to poke out the left & right side of the razor (On the short end of the rectangular head) and it sliced me pretty good, that prompted me to get the Merkur Futur as the blade is fully enclosed, but the head was massive! Aggressiveness in this razor seems to be a subject of debate. I'll put it this way for me. It's very mild on my skin, but the result of using it I can only say it's aggressive on facial hair, the perfect combo for me. Aggressive on hair, mild on skin. Hope this helps. Having used many razors, I can tell you I've landed on my final razor. I do use Feather blades & highly recommend them. I would be careful of them in other razors as they are extremely sharp & angles of blade and gap between the blade & safety bar vary greatly between razors even if they don't really look like they do. If you want to feel how sharp they are, cut a piece of thick paper with your old razor, then the Feather & feel the difference. If you're new to DE shaving, don't give up, you'll cut yourself in the beginning no matter what razor you get, it will take about 3 weeks approx to get to a nick free shave. Try going with the grain and across the grain for a few weeks, later you can go against it if you skin allows it. Get yourself from Walmart, a $2 styptic pencil. Just wet the end and dab it on your nick, you'll get a little sting for two seconds but it stops bleeding there and then with no scab, & no need for tissue paper. Happy Shaving!!!

Let’s start by acknowledging that this is not intended to be, marketed as (or priced) as a first-class razor. It’s advertised as ‘combining affordability with performance’, and that’s probably about right. If you want twice the razor, get yourself a nice Merkur for about twice the price (search for Merkur Double-Edge Razor right here on Amazon.com; you’ll find several nice ones). That said, if you’re just starting out in Double Edged razor shaving and don’t want to spend a lot, or if you’re looking to take your wet-shaving on the road and just want a lightweight DE razor to toss into your travel shave kit, this razor is worth the money. On the plus side, if you use a good blade (I use Feather blades) this razor will give you a decent shave. A ‘minus‘ to me - and it may not be a negative to everyone - is that this razor holds the blade at a much less aggressive angle than the Merkur razors I use. Look at the pictures of the Merkur razors here on Amazon and you’ll see a pronounced curve to their tops; that curved top closes down on the blade, bending it over to achieve a fairly aggressive cutting angle. That angle seems to give me a closer shave. This Feather razor is flatter at the top, consequently it does not bend the razor blade as much and the cutting angle is not as great. Again, the sharper angle is the one my face prefers; this razor’s angle may feel better to you. (I’ve looked at some of the other reviews since I first wrote this, and indeed other reviewers DO feel that this razor’s angle works better for them. So it really is a matter of personal preference.) The other thing to be aware of is that this is, as advertised, a razor made largely of plastic. That saves weight (again, good for travel), but feels less solid in your hand - because it is. That’s not necessarily bad, it just is what it is. This is a moderately priced DE razor, and it will give you a moderately good shave. I recommend it for those who may not want to spend a lot on their first DE razor, or for experienced DE shavers who may looking for a lighter razor and are willing to give up a little bit of closeness in their shave in return. I use if for that reason, and it’s not a bad tradeoff.

After years of using multi blade disposables in the shower the urge for something better came over me. My wife had three straight razors left by her grandad and I began to investigate. What I found was lots of info on straight razors and old double edge Gillette razors that were selling for an arm and a leg and articles and blogs by people who seemed to approach shaving as a ceremony more than a necessity with prices that to me could only be justified as the price to pay for spiritual enlightenment. No thanks. My practical side decided to look at Amazon and I settled on the Feather Double-Edge Razor because I did not want to disassemble and reassemble 3 pieces each time I changed the blade and the price was not excessive. Call me lazy, frugal or both. Also, my Gillette from many years ago was the same style. The combination plastic/metal construction concerned me at first but is no concern now after a month of daily use. The razor is quite easy to adjust to and the plastic handle may even be better as it does not slip when wet. My daily shave has been removed from the shower to the sink and is better than I have experienced in years. Another reviewer expressed concerns that the blade did not seat evenly in the razor and exposure was unequal. I have not noticed that with any of my blades in this razor. I gave this item 4 stars instead of 5 because of the blades that came with it, not the razor. The razor is great. The blades also are excellent, just not suited to my skin. I found that the Feather Hi-Stainless Blades left my face smooth but burning. I used the two that came with the razor but have changed to the Wilkinson Sword Classics from Amazon. There is no burning post shave until the blade is about a week old. After shave stings a bit toward the end of the week, but nothing excessive. Sunday is blade change day and if I decide to change twice a week, blades are dirt cheap compared to the multi blades and the shave closer and more comfortable. I would recommend this razor to anyone with a average beard as it does not seem to be overly aggressive. Those with very heavy beards may want something else but I'm certainly not the one to speak on that. Given the choice I will never shave with a multi blade razor again. I also purchased brush and soap so perhaps I am headed for that ceremonial level. Nah, but it does feel good. EDIT: February 2013. After two months using this razor in combination with the Wilkinson Sword blades I can honestly say that the process of shaving has gotten even easier. I cannot remember when in the past I would look forward to shaving. That is the case now. The Feather DE razor is holding up well, easy to clean after each shave and the blades last at least 10 shaves and remain comfortable. I run my hand across my face at some point in the day and smile at the comfort and smoothness. I changed the star rating to 5 stars based on the razor/blade combination I am now using, the Feather razor with Wilkinson Sword Stainless blades.

I do not write any review but when i tried this razor i fall in love with it its a masterpiece. No nicks and cuts so far.

I purchased this after using a Merkur 34C for my DE shaving. I didn't use the Feather blades that came with it yet. Instead, I used some Astra blades, since that's what I was using with the Merkur, and I wanted to compare apples to apples. I've read that this razor needs to be held with the handle 45 degrees to the face, rather than 30 degrees like most razors. So I did that, and I was blown away with the quality of the shave. I usually do three passes. One with the grain, one across, one against. I started doing the against pass, and I couldn't feel or hear it cutting anything. I thought I was just holding it wrong, but then I realized there was nothing left to cut! Maybe I'm just better at holding a razor at 45 degrees rather than 30, but I guess that's the point. The razor is remarkably easy to use, and though it's a mild razor, it took care of my coarse neck hair no problem. I can honestly say it's the smoothest my neck has ever felt. Holding this razor, feeling how seamlessly the three pieces line up, you can tell that it was made with exceptional precision and care. Blade exposure is equal on both sides with no fiddling with it as you clamp it down. It's all stainless steel, and it WILL last you a lifetime. If you pass it down to your son, it will last him a lifetime. The price is certainly steep, but it's absolutely worth it. Since it's not listed in the description, I can confirm that this is the AS-D2 model.
