Adorable and functional!
Last year I purchased the holiday version of this pie bird with the little santa hat. It was such a hit in all of my holiday pies that I had to get one for the rest of the year. It's the perfect size for a standard double crust pie and will hold up for years to come. This would make a great gift for the baker in your life!

Very Cute
Bought this as a decoration moreso than for its actual function as a pie bird. It matches a bunch of other Le Creuset things I have around the kitchen. Caribbean blue is my favorite color from this brand. It's nice and heavy and sturdy for how small it is. I'm sure it would work well as a pie bird, but works just as great for decorative purposes.

Very good quality
My sister loved adding this beautiful red pie bird to her collection. It is useful in making pies and beautiful on the shelf.

Adorable
I just received this little bird today - it's quite well made and looks super cute sitting in my kitchen. I've just recently been on a pie making kick with the warmer weather and I look forward to using this and will make sure I update my review once I do. The bird is very hollow to allow it to collect and release steam but still feels solid. It comes with very detailed instructions on how to use it including how to pierce the top crust in case you're not feeling creative enough to just dive in. I have been very happy with all of my Le Creuset purchases and this is no exception. According to the box it's 3 1/2" high and safe to use between 500 and -65 degrees Fahrenheit. It says there is a five year guarantee as well. If you like whimsical things in your kitchen this bird will not disappoint! I purchased the white version and will likely get the red and blue in the future. **UPDATE** I used this little bird to make a strawberry pie a few days ago. It was a double crust pie, so I set the bird on the bottom layer of crust and placed the strawberries around it. When putting on the top layer of crust, I pushed it down over the bird's beak so that it could properly vent the pie, leaving the bird's little head poking out of the center of the pie. It went through the trip in the 450 degree oven (to set the bottom crust) to the remaining 45 minutes at 350 degrees without complaint. I washed it in the dishwasher in the silverware rack (it's a bit too small to sit properly elsewhere) and it came out clean. Surprisingly, it never really got all that dirty due to the way it's designed to sit on the bottom crust and have the filling placed around it. When using this bird, I noticed that it seems to vent the pie better - all of my previous pies with fork prick vents only have bubbled up through the sides of the crust to some extent. The maiden bird pie did not have that problem. The only downside is that the bird leaves a hole in the middle of the pie when removed for cutting...but if you really like pie you're too busy cutting a huge slice to notice!

Adorable and effective
I bought this for my mother in law who loves to make pies. She thought that this was so adorable, and said that it works like a charm when she makes covered pies. It's so pretty too that one must keep it on display in their kitchen. Fabulous craftwork. It is very tiny too.

Good for the money
This is great. It's a bit pricier than others, but it's cute and does its job.

Very cute, but might be too small for a deep dish pie
I bought a black pie bird with a yellow beak. I sprung for Le Creuset because I thought the sculpt was the best looking one I'd seen online. Unbelievably adorable in a pie or on a windowsill. And yes, it keeps pies from bubbling over. I've read that a pie bird will make the bottom crust crisper, but I didn't notice a difference using this bird, or one made by another manufacturer. My only complaint: it's a little short, just 3 3/8". It worked fine in a standard pie (2 1/2 pounds of peaches, 9" Pyrex pie plate) but it's head just popped through the crust. If I used more fruit, I don't think it would be tall enough.

It's hard to really write a detailed review on an item like this; I mean, it's a pie bird, it's not a complex piece of equipment. But it certainly does what it's supposed to do. I definitely think my pies are better for having it. It helps support the top crust during baking, so no "sunken crusts." It definitely releases steam, so the fillings don't get too soggy. I generally use mine for various meat pies, rather than fruit pies; I did find when attempting a cherry pie that the filling was far too liquidy and perhaps would have benefitted from cuts in the crust to allow more steam to escape, but I believe that was a problem with the recipe rather than with the pie bird. Plus, the little guy looks adorable. I keep him in his box, with the cardboard insert that keeps him nice and tidy, but he would be just fine out on a shelf as part of the decor as well. The shiny coating is easy to clean, but I used to have a bit of an issue with tiny bits of food inside the belly, neck, and head, as a sponge won't fit. I'd found that a cheap toothbrush (I got a pack of five for a pound from the grocery store) worked wonders in getting out tiny particles of food from the mouth-hole, so now I also use that same toothbrush to scrub the inside, just to make sure he's perfectly clean before he goes back into the box. I got mine as a birthday gift in August of last year (so 15 months ago now), and have used it at least a couple of times a month since, and it still looks brand-new. The coating doesn't chip or crack even when my knife blade hits it or scrapes it. I love Le Creuset, and I do love this little bird. It's one of those pieces that isn't really necessary, but makes you feel good to have and use; just a handy, inexpensive item that makes your pies that little bit nicer to look at and cut into.
