What is the thickest material the switch will snap into and hold? I want to install it into 8mm (5/16) wood sheeting. thanks.

If you look closely at the picture you will see snap shoulders on two sides near the switch itself. That is what the switch grabs on to. I would say the maximum is probably about 1/8". but they are cheap enough that you could break off the shoulders and glue the switch into a tight hole in your 5/16" material.
