This is my third book of jazz arrangements from Brent Edstrom, and like the other two I bought last year, it makes me enormously happy. I've spent 65 of my 80 years of life wishing I could play like a jazz pianist instead of the church organist I'm trained to be, and dozens of books over the years have helped me accomplish that switch to a certain extent. But this book, like the whole series, is one of the best I've ever encountered. It's not for beginners. You need to be a proficient piano player to manage these arrangements well, and you need at least a passing familiarity with the tunes and the varied jazz styles that Edstrom uses. Even though I meet both those criteria, I've also learned that you need to be willing to practice, really practice, to get these down so they sound the way they're supposed to. But when you do, it's so satisfying--even with tunes you didn't know well (or at all) before. So while I'll never be able to play in the piano bar of my dreams, I can replicate some of that imagined music in my own living room.(One little irritation: What possessed the publisher not to put spiral binding on these wonderful books? It's taking me months to get the page-turning to be barely tolerable.)

I really enjoy tackling the pieces in this Jazz Piano Series. Just tricky enough to challenge the average piano amateur. Great arrangements.
