I would say like a material polyester. These mouse pads are fantastic! Especially for the price! I actually gave the other two a way to friends who were whining about theirs! I will definitely buy again!

Are these mouse pads thick enough and rigid enough to be used on a bed or sofa with nothing underneath?

Well, I set my pad on my bed that was made and has a reasonably firm mattress and the mouse slid around just fine.
