Another Great Drive From Pioneer.
Awesome drive & works like a charm. Can't really go wrong with Pioneer. My 10 year old Pioneer DVD writer is still going strong & this was an upgrade to give me Blu-ray capabilities. Very happy with the drive.

... on my new machine and so far everything works great. A little noisy when installing from discs
Bought this drive to use on my new machine and so far everything works great. A little noisy when installing from discs, but that's to be expected and it's nothing that will annoy you. Bear in mind that the package I bought includes the Blu Ray software! If you don't buy it with the software you're going to have to either pirate it or buy it separate. I wouldn't recommend pirating this stuff, as it's licensed and is more difficult than you'd think to get around, and the software by itself can cost you upwards of $70 to buy! Just do yourself a favor and buy the bundle, you'll thank yourself later for the lack of a headache. This item is extremely easy to install and would not be intimidating to someone installing hardware for the first time. That aside I did a lot of research going in to purchasing a new BR drive for my new machine and everything I read kept me going back to Pioneer as the most reliable. I've never had an issue with Pioneer considering I use their decks in my vehicles and have been for years now. You'll pay a few more bucks for it but it is worth it knowing that they maintain quality and efficiency with their products!

The one to get for blu-rays etc...
I kept buying other highly rated drives which work fine for data but have trouble with fingerprints and minor defects when playing movies. This drive is what I needed all along. "The BDR-2209 has features such as PowerRead™, Auto Quiet mode, PureRead2, and QuickPlay. PowerRead3 can provide smoother movie playback when a disc has fingerprints or minor surface scratches. Auto Quiet mode intelligently adjusts the disc rotation speed to reduce noise (useful while watching movies or listening to music), PureRead automatically adjusts drive parameters to minimize sound glitches during music playback..." You will need to download their drive utility.

WORKS FLAWLESS
Works flawless and pretty low noise level.I see reviews complaining about software, but there is no burning software that comes with this drive.it is simply the drive, screws, data and power conversion cables and a blank M disc for bluray. This will require bluray burning software of your choice to enable full function. I would recommend Cyberlink media suite 14 ultra or 15 ultra,it has all the codex you need play and create your own movies on any media disc, including the M disc that comes with the drive. The big deal about M disc is that you burn once and read forever,it has a 225 year read lifespan.

Great SATA-3 Blu-Ray/DVD player burner
Installed easily, connected simply. Worked immediately. Installed provided PowerDVD software. I haven't tested everything on it yet. It came with a 25Gig blank Blu-Ray disk. I have yet to test burning to it. I expect it will perform as it was designed to.

Great device, works well
Great device, works well, very easy to install, however...Cyberlink Media player bundled software was useless. Had to _purchase_ an upgrade to get blue ray movies to play. It ships with cyberlink version 12... none of my movies played at all, said I had to update. If you can find the player with no software, I would recommend you go that way - and find better software elsewhere.

much improved results
I originally wrote a so-so review on this item. Whether it was the burner, software or disk, I was only having 60-70% success. As far as I know the only thing that has changed since my first review is a new pack of the exact same brand of disk. Also originally I could only burn at 1X speed to achieve the above so-so results.Since then, I have gone thru about 30 more discs with 100% success while increasing the burn speed to 6X. I can't explain it beyond a sketchy batch of discs.my set-up is as beforePioneer BDR-2209Ashampoo Burning Studio 18Verbatim BD-R TL

LG drive cheaper and faster
I've pretty much always used Pioneer optical drives since Plexstor became an OEM, and I've been happy with them up through the BR-209DBK.I purchased a Vantek USB 3 case and put the BR-209UBK in it and this drive seems particularly slow at ripping Blu Ray disks - I believe the maximum I've seen is 4.3x - and now that rpc1.org has gone the way of the dodo it seems that firmware bypassing ripguard is a thing of the past.Meanwhile, I've purchased a USB 3 external with an LG drive ([...]) which rips at 7+x and I'm happily putting the Pioneer aside as another legacy lesson.
