The Best of the Call of Duty Franchise
With 'Black Ops' having been released this past November and becoming the highest-selling Call of Duty game in the franchise, what made me turn the clock backwards and play 'World at War'? The answer is simple: balanced gameplay. There is no doubt that the peak point of any Call of Duty game from 'Modern Warfare' and beyond is its incredible multiplayer. Well... "incredible" applying to really only 'Modern Warfare' and 'World at War'. 'Modern Warfare 2's' multiplayer took what had been established by its predecessors, tried to expand it beyond a scope of reasonable means, and ended up failing miserably creating one of the most broken multiplayer experiences of any contemporary game. 'Black Ops' fared much better, bringing more balance to the gameplay (initially) and well-designed multiplayer maps as well as probably the best campaign storyline in Call of Duty's history. The problem with 'Black Ops' was how stale gameplay became after only a few months of playtime. Treyarch exaggerated the customization of your character and, while what you can customize is innovative, it gets boring when you can simply buy everything at a low cost. 'Black Ops' currency system was an attempt to force the player to work and literally "pay" for what they wanted in their load out. The problem arose, however, that once you obtained your "Superman class" (i.e. every perk, weapon, accessories, etc. you wanted), there was little incentive to continue playing the game, and this was the point at which I sold 'Black Ops'. I ended up reverting all the way back to 'Call of Duty 4', which remains to be an excellent, innovative, challenging, and fair game to this day. But what about 'World at War'? Its status being fallen into the shadow of its big brother, CoD 4, takes away from the appreciation and respect the game deserves. With a dark setting, no humour, an entirely serious tone, an intense campaign storyline, and being the goriest of all the Call of Duty games - 'World at War' stands out amongst the quickly growing crowd of its brother and sister games. I cannot praise the storyline and single player campaign enough and, whilst I admitted that 'Black Ops' has the #1 superior campaign of all Call of Duty games, 'World at War's' comes in a very, very close second. Also of utmost importance to me (and most other players), the multiplayer is everything that it should be: 1) Fun 2) Balanced 3) Fair 4) Exciting While some in the list could be construed into the same thing, these are the four adjectives that come to my mind when thinking of 'World at War's' multiplayer. Some may disagree and exclaim that the MP40 submachine gun is imbalanced, and they are fine to think that way (personally, I find the rifles and bolt-action weapons to be more devastating than any SMG). For me, however, 'World at War' delivers the joy I felt when I played 'Call of Duty 4's' multiplayer for the first time, and *thensome*. I also originate my war-themed, first-person shooter history in 'Medal of Honor: Allied Assault' for the PC - naturally, there exists a great appreciation and appeal towards WWII-era shooters for me. In sum, 'World at War' gets a "check +" in every category and I am truly impressed with this addition to the currently dismantled 'Call of Duty' franchise steering itself into mediocre and broken oblivion. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes first-person shooters, is sick of 'Modern Warfare 2' and/or 'Black Ops', and enjoys balanced multiplayer gameplay.

Still fun...
I keep seeing alot of people say this game sucks or I am tired of WWII. Hogwash I say. If it isn't WWII (which there have been that many entried lately), then we are killing aliens or doing things like Modern Warfare, which is alot like America's Army, Splinter Cell, or alot of other games that do the same thing over and over. Personally, they keep doind that as long as the game is cool. And this game is cool. The best in the series??? No, but still alot of fun. The single player mission is intense like all COD games that have come before it. There are few moments to rest while playing it. The sound isn't great on the guns, but it is solid. Everyone wants sound effects like on TV, but guns fired in real life don't sound like that. They sound alot like what is in this game. And there are alot of cool levels here, with the story being told from different perspectives: The Russians fighting there way to Germany and the Americans fighting the Japanese. While the battles are intense, the graphics are very good as well as the sound effects. And the game runs smooth. The only bad part is is that the game ends too soon which had become a common occurance for each COD game since the first. You will get no more than around 8 hours on this game, which seems to be the way most games go nowadays unless you are playing Half-Life or Farcry. Mp is what most seem to want, and it doesn't dissappoint. The achievements are pretty much the same as MW, except they have added kills with dogs and a whole category for vehicles. The battles are mostly fast and furious and the maps are pretty cool as well. Some maps don't support more than about 30 people without being to cluttered while most are big enough. I only had 2 real issues with the MP: my computer would freeze alot and I do mean alot and HC. My computer stats were lost twice because of a mjor malfunction, so having to start over after reaching level 65 wasn't any fun. And HC, I don't really like it. Being sniped by a pistol clear across the board sucks and running from cover while someone sprays bullets because they saw something move and getting kills that way doens't take any skill. I would spec guys and when the UAV would come up, they would just shoot thru wall or vehicles wherever the dots were and get kills that way. I still miss the old play which doesn't seem to be around anymore. Oh well... Anyways, I thought this game was great and will play any game that looks great, sounds great, and plays great no matter what setting the game is in. If you liked COD before, don't miss out on this.

CoD 4: WWII Warfare.. oh, I mean, um, CoD5: World at War.
So I finally got to play the three modes this game has to offer, and since it had been a hot issue, whether this game was just CoD 4 on WWII wheels, I think some things needed to be cleared up. - Graphics- this game doesn't look much better or detailed than CoD4. The difference? Much fancier settings lead to seemingly "better" graphics. CoD 4 took place in very droll settings (modern- day terrorists should get interior decorators, for reals) but the fact of the matter is, they look practically the same. That's a no no for W@W, 'cos they could have at least ....improved a bit. The water, in case you were wondering, looks good enough to drink, get some type of poisoning for drinking water where rats pee, and then die drowning in your own pool of vomit and bile right by the good looking water. (since water and face movements are two watermarks for how good graphics are) -Sound- the guns sound amazing...in the sense that most WWII weapons sounded like pop guns in comparison to modern guns. The voice acting is really really good. Like, really. The music in the Pacific Theater levels SUCKS. It actually sucks so much, it's overshadowing a very nice game. It's a faux pas comparable to using Godsmack for PoP Warrior Within. I dunno who Sean Murray is, but dude, you is the suckzors. On the other hand, Mr. Lost Boys himelf as Cpl-then-Sgt- Roebuck is EXCELLENT. And, not to be left behind by Gary Oldman as Reznov (who, for any of you who saw Enemy at the Gates, should have been called Koulikov, but I guess they would have sued) -Gameplay- Oooh ok, the nitty gritty. This game has way more...um...quirks than CoD4. Collectibles, and um, modes and stuff. So, if that's your tea in a cup, goodly. But this game does not feel as tight as CoD4. The "sloppiness" isn't so bad that it detracts from gameplay, but it is noticeable. Right from the start. It doesn't help either that more often than not, there's a variety of paths to take... not that the game is not linear... it is, just, it's up to you whether or not you want to take it up through the trench, or whether you want to slap the bullseye on your helmet and go over the top. But, for the most part, ahem... yes, this is CoD 4 on WWII wheels. To me though, that's not bad. Is it worth shelling over $60? At first I thought no, but there's the issue of different game modes... Single campaign solo- This game suffers greatly from uneven level design. Let me specify...the game, unlike CoD4, doesn't follow a cohesive storyline...the problem lies in the fact that you're not pursuing two terrorists who have one common endgame...no, you're fighting the whole axis...so, when you take that from macro to micro, it suffers and the levels seem tacked on. Truth be told, every level feels separate from the next. Which, in retrospective, makes CoD4s SP truly shine, because it now seems like a great movie. W@W just seems like random WWII encounters put together. I LOVE WII so that's not a problem for me, but it might be for you. Now, the meat and potatoes, -Competitive MP- well. I am WOWED. It is very much so like CoD 4, but before you start complaining.... think about it: what's bad about that!? And what I've been hearing is true: Power Housing in this game is way more difficult, as is camping....because, it's easy to catch a camper sitting on his arse from behind. The level designs were thought in a more organic way... I think. War ravaged buildings= outlandish situations. Another, very interesting byproduct of this being a WWII is the weapons. You might say "huh??" Well, WWII shooters have... WWII guns. What does that mean?? Well, by modern-day guns standards... a lot of the weapons used in WWII are underpowered. A few exceptions aside, the weaknesses of WWII guns have been implemented in a way that it hinders you like it would in real life, something that wasn't really present in CoD4, because modern day guns are a progression of improvement in weaponry. The MP5 for example, is a powerhouse, because heck, it's a frickin' state of the art gun! But, for example... take the beloved M1 Garand. It's powerful, and it is precise. And you have to have a happy trigger finger to have a good repeat on it. And you have to take a frickin' clip out, and it goes "ping!' when you're out, and that's gonna be every 8 shots. Shoot! Another example? The BAR. Ooooh, chills. Well, it's slow going, and the clip is a measly 20 bullets. Shall we talk about bolt action rifles? Shoot, bolt, shoot, bolt... five bullets and megalong reload??? Oh noes! Also, the grenades weren't as powerful as they are now, and Tater Mashers are sort of a joke, unless you have the aim of William Tell. So I think, for now, since I'm still starting, the gameplay has been kept level with the guns as well. Now, the pleasant surprise, -Coop MP- Well, I played with a friend, and WOW, we kept dying and coming back laughing. Talk about team work being important. It's similar to R2s co-op, but there are no classes, so every character is on the level, and every player can take care of their buddies with careful planning. But I gotta say, and hey, we only played about two levels, my friend and I , but this mode made me say "well, I'm glad I didn't wait until it got down to $40" Really. I mean, this mode of play overshadows the SP greatly, for the single fact that it's the same thing, just multiplayer. So, these issues taken into account, I still don't know if we could cut Treyarch some slack or not...they say plagiarism is the best form of compliment. These guys might not be the best developers around... and they are not far from being the worst, from what I hear ( I never played CoD3), but they sure know how to identify the features that make a good game and putting them together. As a sidenote, the first level you play as a Soviet is a dead ringer for the initial scenes from Enemy at the Gates, which had been somewhat depicted in CoD, but it didn't matter much to me, it was incredibly fun. Old timey sniping was good timey sniping. Btw- the flamethrower? Let's just say, I've rekindled my pyromania, at least in a safe way. Pun totally intended.

Not too bad for $20
I'm not going to get into all of the details of this game as there are a ton of resources out there outlining the campaign and online modes but if you want a cheap first-person shooter for the DS, this is a good choice. Overall the graphics look pretty good on the DSi XL that I play this game on and there are times where it is kinda hard to see your enemies but if you shoot enough rounds in that general direction, you eventually drop them. I think the campaign mode took me around 20 hours or so to beat and I had the difficulty turned way down so it would be easier. This game has some fun vs. modes and online play that you can use and I was very impressed with the sound of the weapons and the detailing of the backgrounds to all of the game play. There will always be games out there with better graphics than what you have but you don't have a lot of options when it comes to FPS on the DSi so I figured I would give this game a chance and I did not walk away disappointed. The only thing that I have noticed is that sometimes it seems like I have to empty and entire magazine of rounds in an enemy to drop him and at certain points of the game it feels like a mindless carnival shoot-em-up but it is still fun. Also, the controls can be a bit tricky. You use the L/R buttons to fire and your D-pad to walk forward, backward, left and right. To look around, you use the cursor on the touch screen which can leave the DSi a bit lop-sided in your hands, depending how you sit when you play. I usually prop my XL on a couch pillow to keep it up and balance the XL in my left hand to keep it steady. I know it sounds unusual to get instructions like this but when you are talking about a game that you will play for hours at a time, you need to be comfortable. The reason why I traded in my DS Lite for the XL was because the Lite didn't fit my hands and would leave my thumbs aching about 30 minutes of play time, regardless how I held the lite, the DS XL fits me much better (but the XL is a different review altogether that I have posted). Anyway, if you buy this game expecting nothing more than a fun shoot-em-up with average graphics, you will be satisfied.

Intense WW2 Real Battles
This game is so intense to me because it simulates real battles that happened in WW2 & this is a very tragic war in which millions of lives were lost. I have had family members in WW2 & have watched just about every documentary on the subject, so I am really spooked about actually feeling like you are in a war & the men who are beside you are counting on you to not die. This game moves pretty fast & you have to constantly think about strategy with the types of weapons that you use from the time period, you really get the feeling of what it was like (in a way) to have to deal with limited ammo & even fighting with bayonette's because you ran out of ammo. A lot of the time you have to take cover, call in airstrikes in strategic areas, know when to move forward & again take cover. Achieve your mission with all your men alive & be prepared for unexpected explosions & ambushes. I have only begun to start playing this game, it is very complex & thinking is required, because it's not just about shooting everyone, you have to play to stay alive & that means sometimes taking cover, all of the above. This game gives me the chills & is so intense it just may give me PTSD, but definitely I feel a bit of what it was like & the reality of it all. So this is not a fun game, but an intensely strategic & real feeling game, especially if you have ties to anyone in WW2 or can appreciate what losses & sacrifices were made to stop Japan & Germany from taking over the whole world, it is literally the world at war. You can play as an American or Russian, there is also a Nazi Zombie game that is separate from the real game. Like I said, I have just started playing this game & it is Intense!!

Another Great CoD game
Not sure why yet another CoD game gets such bad reviews. Seems to be a reoccurring theme of multi-player hackers, PC issues (whether it be install or underpowered PC), or just hater unwilling to let minor details go. I mainly play solo campaigns so I can't say much about multi-player. If you have played a CoD game before, you will instantly be familiar with the layout of this game. Cut scene, dropped in the middle of the action, get to destination or knock out the enemy tanks, towers defense. The game itself is good. Graphics are what you would expect, especially since it was release after CoD4: MW which had pretty good graphics. I run the game maxed out and in my opinion, I think they did a great job with textures and lighting. I will say that the AI (team members or enemies) are hit or miss sometimes. Some instances they are down right vicious while other times, they are dumb as a sack of rocks. Overall though, the game is pretty consistent. I haven't had any issues where the campaign is stuck in limbo (happened a lot with Call of Duty 2 - I'd just have to restart the mission but that gets tiring after a while). I had no issues installing the game. I am running a Dell XPS 8700, Core i7, GTX 760, 24gb RAM, Win7 Pro. Clearly it is overkill for the game. It does try to install Punkbuster, which you can opt out of. Each time you run the game, it will tell you that Punkbuster is not enabled blah blah blah. Just click OK and move on. I haven't had any issues with blue screens, freezing or the game closing out. The game runs without the use of third party DRM software such as Steam or Origins. If you like the CoD franchise and like World War themed shooters, I highly recommend this game.

A Call of Duty that was thrown together for some craptastic fun.
First off I would l like to say this game left me really un-decided on how I felt about it because I liked it and dis-liked it at the same time, and here is why. First I will start by telling you what I dis-liked about it. When the game starts out you are rescued from a Japanese P.O.W. camp, and you're are given a couple of weapons. While I am starting to make my way outside I am told by one of the guys named Roebuck that aided in the rescue, and of whom is voiced by Kiefer Sutherland to "follow him, and stay close". So after hearing this I try my best to do so. But staying close is hard to do when everyone is shooting at you, so I decide to find some good cover till whomever is shooting at me is dead. But while I am doing this the guy I am supposed to be following is long gone. So I try to find him, and regroup with him. I get turned around not understanding what direction I should be going, and get totally lost. I could not see any clear paths to get to the checkpoint, which is something I can easily figure out in most COD games. Anyway because I am lost in the wrong direction the guy I am supposed to be following yells at me wondering what I am doing, and why I'm not staying close to him all in Kiefer Sutherland's voice. Now if you are a 24 fan like I am you know how Kiefer sounds when he is yelling at someone on the show. Now I really love Kiefer in 24, but hearing him yell at me like that, and barking orders at me made me want to punch him, or shoot the character he was voice acting for. XD The second worse thing in this game is the cursing. I have never seen so much cursing in a game, especially when it comes to using the f-word. Thankfully this feature can be turned off but this also turns off the gory parts too which I don't mind because it adds to the realism. The third thing that's bad is the checkpoints. Apart from having a hard time finding some of them, there are so many of them you won't even know you made it to one unless you die, or unless you are paying more attention to everything on screen. Every little area you get past has a checkpoint it sometimes gets really ridiculous. The funny thing is you will die so many times in some areas that you will sometimes be glad to have some of those checkpoints, although most of them just seemed pointless. Now for the worst part about the checkpoints is that some of them make you re-appear in the worst places. One checkpoint actually made me re-appear next to a grenade about to go off. I got killed 3 times by the same grenade at this checkpoint. Another time after dying after another checkpoint I re-appeared right in front of a guy that was shooting me in the back of the head. The first time it did this I couldn't figure out why I died so easily because at the time I thought the guy in back of me was a friendly. Now when you re-appear at most checkpoints you would figure that you would be surrounded by friendlies like I did, this isn't the case in this game. Either some tard designed the checkpoint system in this game or it was a genius move to keep you on your toes. Because when you re-appeared at a checkpoint in bad situations like this you have split second timing to get out of them. The fourth thing I didn't like about the game was sometimes it seemed like your buddies were there to just to keep you company not to help you. It was funny because sometimes the enemy would throw a grenade next to one of your buddies and all they would do was run like chickens, but when you get next to it you have a slim chance to throw it back. Sometimes the grenade indicator wouldn't show up right away, and you die from it by the time you got up to it. At least your buddies do yell grenade right away. I learned that the A.I. has the ability to throw grenades back, but when it comes to your buddies doing that it chooses not too. When it comes to the enemy and you throwing grenades at them there is a good chance of it coming right back at you. Now for the good. The controls are similar to the rest of the COD games when it comes to using the Wii Remote and are easy to pick up, but sadly no ability to play with the classic controller. The graphics are pretty good for the Wii but I felt lacked compared to other COD games for the Wii. Explosions, and fire, and some of the detail looked pretty awesome. What I found funny was when I used a flame thrower on the enemy he wasn't charred beyond recognition, instead the guys that were killed by it looked like they were wearing burn resistant clothes because when they died their clothes weren't singed at all, and neither were their bodies. The other good thing about this game was the small feeling of accomplishment I got after getting past a tough area. This lead to another good thing about the game which was that I for some reason got really enthralled in it, and couldn't put the game down no matter what dis-likes I had about it. The stories of each character were pretty good too. If you have a Wii and love the COD games like I do then you might want to take the plunge and add this to your collection since you can get it for a pretty cheap price. Sadly the multi-player online for this game I heard was really good but Nintendo won't be supporting the Wii wi-fi for the games anymore this month, so I wouldn't suggest getting the game for the multi-player online. Although there is supposed to be a offline squad mate mode I haven't tried out with a friend yet. If you like COD games but are wary of this one I would suggest renting it rather then buying it unless you can get the game dirt cheap, only because you can probably beat this game in a couple afternoons. Update: When I wrote this I hadn't yet beat the game, but I knew I was close to doing so. I got this game on the april 14th and beat it on the April 16th. So yea it is pretty short and can be completed in two afternoons, although it did take me three. One thing I noticed was when you save and quit it's always at your last checkpoint you don't have to start out at the begining of that mission. So when I saved last I was just 2 checkpoints away from the end which was cool, because it did take me over a half hour to get past those. The last stages have to be the hardest in the game I found myself dying several times. I did find out your buddies in these stages actually help you out more then you realize if you are patient with them. There is a limited amount of the enemy after each checkpoint in most if not all of the missions which is nice too. My unit and I cleared one area out before the next checkpoint, so when there was no more gun fire to be heard I was able to easily walk to the next checkpoint without getting shot at or killed. I found that in some areas if you rush them you are more then likely to get killed then if you hold back and wait up to allow your buddies to give you some cover fire. Another thing that sucked about the checkpoints was it was pretty much an automatic save when you got to one. So if you were low on ammo and grenades you were screwed unless you could find some in the area you were at. I did this on my last save but was pleasantly surprised to find I could actually go back to other areas I had already been through that was up to 3 checkpoints before to find more weapons, ammo, and grenades. The only thing that sucks is when you save and quit, or die you don't retain the stuff you just re-armed yourself with making you have to go back and get it all over again. The nice part about this is if you cleared the area of enemies you should have no problem doing this. The only way to make sure you retain fully loaded weapons, and grenades is to re-load them before you hit the next checkpoint.
