How deep should I plant a water lily?

Most hardy water lilies sit with 30–90cm of water above the crown. Start a new plant on bricks so the first leaves reach the surface, then lower the basket as the plant grows.

When is the best time to plant water lilies in the UK?

April to July, once the water has begun to warm. Lilies planted in spring establish quickly and often flower the same summer. Autumn planting rarely produces flowers that year.

Which water lily suits a small pond?

Pygmy varieties such as Nymphaea Pygmaea Rubra work in 30–40cm of water and spread under a metre. Vigorous lilies need 60cm or more and will swamp a small pond within two seasons.

Where do pond iris go in a pond?

Pond iris are marginals. Plant them in an aquatic basket on the shelf with 0–15cm of water over the compost. Iris laevigata and versicolor flower from May to July.

Will water lilies and pond iris survive winter?

Yes, as long as the crown sits below the ice line. Hardy lilies and pond iris die back in autumn and regrow from the rhizome each spring without needing to be lifted.
