Great window into the mind of an important Christian thinker
This book is a collection of essays on a list of books that C.S. Lewis listed in a poll solicited by Christian Century magazine in which they posed the following question to cultural leaders in the early 1960s: "What books did most to shape your vocational attitude and your philosophy of life?" The essays are academic in character, and written by first-rate Lewis scholars in most cases. the chapters on Otto's The Idea of the Holy, Chesterton's The Everlasting Man, and George Herbert's The Temple were particularly fine. Reading the essays made me want to read these books that influenced Lewis.

Well worth reading through Lewis's own favorites
This book will open up several doors for the serious Lewis reader as to his own selection of literary influences. The introduction by David Werther is insightful and inviting as to what delights lay ahead from ten scholars opening up a treasure chest of Lewis choice of life long favorites.

A recommendation
I haven't read this book, so you're probably wondering why I'm writing a review for a book that I haven't read. C.S. Lewis always encouraged people to read works for themselves instead of reading what other people had to say about them. I recommend that you read these works for yourself first; if you are still curious about what these writers have to say about the works and their impact on C.S. Lewis, then I'm sure you will get more out of them after having experiencing the works for yourself.
