Do these have a strong smell?

They do have a strong smell but if you put them in water it will dissolve.

I'm not sure what you're meaning alive. However, the pearls inside were easy to retrieve from the shells.

What can you do with the pearls ?

if you have a pearl driller you can drill a hole and glue a silver ring so you can make a pendant or earrings (if you buy similar colors).
