Why can I buy this on Amazon and receive it in the next week but there is no news on my copy from the backed Kickstarter?

Because this publisher is pretty terrible. They have essentially enslaved the owner, using fine print in a previous contract to seize ownership of any games he makes for the rest of his life. It's almost certainly illegal, but they've also forced him to pay for the kickstart shipping costs personally and he's morgaged his house to do so, so he can't afford a lawyer. Which also means they haven't paid him for designing the game but have actually made him pay for the shipping issues out of his own pockets while they take all the profits and go home laughing.

is there a similar sense of adventure to Robinson Crusoe? some of the art seems similar.

Yes, there is a similar sense of the survival aspect and resource management mechanics.

How many cards are in this game “Unbroken?”

x140) 63.5x88 cards x15) 70x120 cards x31 Large Cards (non-sleeveable) To my knowledge. Hope this helps.

Does this copy have an updated two layered recessed board like the kickstarter upgrade?

I believe that all copies have the two-layer board. The one I received via Amazon did.
