14 or 12 gauge wire is what it is designed for.

How big a hole is required?

The hole needs to be 5/8. I usually use a variable bit in order to keep the hole tight as possible.

Does this hold up to e85?

I've been using it for E85 for 1.5 years and no issues yet.
