The strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

An Old TV Movie
Prime Video lists this as a 2002 production, but it's actually a TV movie dating from 1968. Produced by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame, with background music by Robert Cobert who also did the music for Dark Shadows. Actually, some of the music touches are so similar that you might swear you are watching a Dark Shadows episode. Sadly, the print is rather blurry and low res, especially for the first half, though it improves a bit before the end. Jack Palance has a certain animal vitality as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, but there is little of interest in the writing for him to work with; he was later used by Dan Curtis to much greater effect in "Dan Curtis' Dracula." Denholm Elliot (of Indiana Jones) is very good as Dr. Jekyll's friend and conscience. The rest of the cast is forgettable. There are decent sets and costumes but the videotape makes everything look cheap. Doesn't convey much of the sense of mystery from Stevenson's original story. The Spencer Tracy and Frederic March movies of this story are more worth looking up.

Three and one-half
This Jekyll/Hyde rendition was a 1968 made-for-TV movie. Keeping that in mind, it wasn’t so bad. It is awfully dark, which was supposed to create a certain ‘Jack the Ripper’ atmosphere, I suppose. It just made a number of scenes hard to see. I like Jack Palance and Denholm Elliott, and both came through, Palance more than Elliott, but Elliott wasn’t bad. The girl, I’ve already forgotten her real name and movie name, was not believable. It wasn’t terrible. It might be just the thing for a lazy, rainy Saturday.

My favorite Jekyll and Hyde
I last saw this made-for-TV movie when I was a teenager, and to date it remains my favorite telling of the Jekyll and Hyde story, even more than the Spencer Tracy version. It has a very Gothic quality to it, with the same atmosphere as Dark Shadows (and was actually produced by Dan Curtis, who created Dark Shadows). I find Palance very convincing as both personalities and was excited when I found that I could purchase the video. For those who only know Palance from his late career appearance in City Slickers, this will hopefully increase your respect for his talents.

What of tomorrow?
Like Micheal Gough, Jack Palance always creeps me out. The faces that Palance makes in this film when he is attacking someone are completely savage. Killing for the pure pleasure. I also watched the film where Palance plays Dracula. I think he did a great job in that movie as well.

0 star..wrong description to this video
actors to slow, the writing was good, but I felt like I was the cringing director. They needed to have better timing, and blinking and facial expression was off--- the camera was too close to the faces during shots/converse that should be farther back---it just wasn't correct. The lighting, and props were ok. The people walking were at an unnatural "action" called gait.

For Those Who Like Retro TV
This Canadian production was first broadcast in January 1968.It is more a play than a movieand it boasts some great British actors like Billie Whitelaw and Denholm Elliot. The real star isJack Palance of course. His animalistic face and intimidating prescence gives the viewer chills even beforeMr Hyde does anything nasty. This has the old static quality of video taped television, the plot graduallybuilding to a tragic climax.

Great transition from novella to film
I read Robert L. Stevenson's novella before viewing this film. I believe that the screenplay & story development surpassed Stevenson's original story. The novella could only speak of unmentionable debaucheries & cruelties that were not fully described. Perhaps publishing policy of the time limited Stevenson. In this film, the violence is fully depicted and we see the motivation for each killing or act of violence. The makeup on Jack Palance is effective but not grotesque or overdone. The settings in Toronto & 19th century sets conjure up London of that period. Very realistic and suspenseful. Well done by cast, writers & director.

Time and Changes
Many years ago, when I first saw this version, Mr. Palance was the scariest Hyde I had seen. I held that memory and like many things, the more sophisticated, experienced me finds I am seeing this depiction differently. Alas. However the story is still the story and worth revisiting.

Definitive Version ?
This is arguably one of the best versions of this classic tale availableJust one thing to nitpick about. There is no interview with Jack Palance bonus feature as stated on the dvd case.
