I wish I had bought this first.
I am in total love with this machine. I am a new sewer, started in September 2015. I've done a lot of sewing by hand and dabbled a bit in mini courses when I was in third grade back in 1973. Lol. My first machine was a singer 4432 in September. Which has already gone to the shop once to have its hook timing fixed. For $86. For a machine I spent $139 on. Not very happy. Especially when three days after I got it back, the same thing happened. When the hook timing is off, you can't pull up the bobbin thread, so you essentially are unable to sew anything. And if you can't figure out how to fix it yourself – and it's not easy for a lot of machines and the 4432 is one of them — then you have to pay someone else to do it. Anyway, long story short I wasn't about to spend another $86 to get the hook timing fixed on a $139 machine that I'd already spent $86 on three days earlier. I decided to cut my losses and buy a better machine. This is where the brother HC 1850 comes in. I did a lot of research and found that brother was best for my needs. After speaking with the guy who repaired my singer, he told me that brother and babylock are made by the same company. That was pretty much all I needed to hear. So I had narrowed it down to this machine or the SE400 which is a combination embroidery/sewing machine. The price on this machine was $179 when I bought it. And the SE400 was $270 at the time of my decision. I decided against the embroidery machine simply for the reason that it would be a long time before I would actually have use of the embroidery. And I didn't want to discover many months after buying it that some part of the embroidery didn't work and I was now out of warranty. So I thought to just buy the lesser expensive of the two which was the HC1850. Wise choice because I am still discovering this machine after weeks of having it. And I will say that this machine performs extraordinarily well. It really "finesses" your sewing. The heavy duty from singer 4432 "bullied" my sewing. I found that the singer had a lot of bobbin jams and just really weird hissy fits for no apparent reason. And for a while I thought I was doing something wrong. I wasn't. Now that I have this machine, I am confident that it was the machine and not me. This machine is so easy to work with it is really a joy to use. I never sit down and start to use it and think, "what is this going to do to me today to make me fiddle around with it/fix it for an hour before I can actually start selling?" I never have any trouble with it. With the singer I always faced sewing with trepidation, and that's no way to go into a hobby you really like. I did a big project with painters dropcloth recently which can be very ravelly and linty. Once I got an error message early on saying that I needed to clean out the bobbin case and the race. I did that, extraordinarily easily, by the way, and have not had any problems since. Now I suspect I was getting similar problems with my singer 4432, but as that is a mechanical machine, it gives you no such prompting as to what you need to do or than anything is actually happening. It will just stop working - gives you bobbin jams, and then messes up your timing. I sat down yesterday and played around with a lot of the stitches – they are fantastic. And the monogramming, while not gorgeous, is pretty good. It would be great for labeling children's clothing and the like. So bottom line, if you're looking for a machine that is very easy to use, very lightweight but does not move while you were using it, comes with a number of feet, comes with the quilting table, and is extremely reliable and makes your sewing easier and a pleasant experience, try this machine. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

2-Day Review— Love it! 50+ Years Sewing Experience
2-day quick review I just bought this sewing machine and after using it for just two days I wanted to write a quick review. In short – – it’s amazing. I’ve been sewing for 50 years. This machine runs like a champ. Let’s hit the basics. Set up: simple and straightforward. When you fill the bobbin you can use the footpedal or the arrow on the face of the machine to wind it but you cannot use the arrow with a foot pedal plugged in. Took me a minute to figure that out. Easy fix. The upper thread is super straightforward like a traditional sewing machine. I really appreciate that you don’t have to Lower and raise the needle to get the bobbin thread up. That step isn’t necessary at all it happens automatically once you start sewing. There is a nifty cut off on the plate that cuts the thread and you are ready to go. Sewing: I just made a couple of new pillows for my sofa with piping and invisible zippers. What I really appreciate about this machine is when I get from one end to the other they are the same length. The two machines I had prior would always leave the top of the bottom Different lengths no matter how hard I tried or adjusted. As for the sewing itself it comes right along and you have a slider to control the stitch speed. You can press the arrow on the face of the machine to start without having to use the foot pedal or you can use a foot pedal if that’s what you’re accustomed to. Either way the actual sewing goes very well. Stitch options: I have more to choose from then I will probably ever use. What I really appreciate about choosing a stitch is that you increase or decrease the number in the digital display according to the stitched number you want to use. Best of all, it will tell you which specific press or foot to use with that specific stitch. How cool is that? Layout/design: very easy and intuitive. Not only is the quick reference guide in manual written out well but the machine itself is very visually appealing and easy to understand. I am more visually oriented so I appreciate the way the designers thought to layout the user experience. I’ve only used it for a couple of days and already it feels like I’ve had it for a long time. Overall: this machine is pretty lightweight considering how heavy my prior sewing machines were. Hopefully that won’t mean a sacrifice of quality long-term. But time will tell. I’m really pleased with this sewing machine. Speaking from 50 years of sewing machine it gets the job done, is easy to use, looks very nice, with easy to follow instructions.

I absolutely love it! My husband ordered it for me after ...
I absolutely love it! My husband ordered it for me after my vintage ones started acting funky on me. All sorts of tension problems as they got older. I told him I probably will never need this many stitches and most likely only use like 4. But hey why not, maybe one day I might venture off and need those other stitches. I will say I have not used the needle threader yet. I really don't know why, I just don't feel the need to need it yet. Threading the machine is really easy. Threading the bobbin is even easier. There is plenty of instructions. I know a lot of people complain on Brother instructions where the English just runs right off into Spanish. But I received a book just for English and then there was a book for everything else. Selecting the stitch is really easy and picking the distance between each stitch is just as easy. There is 3 speeds to chose from. Since I am not the best at straight lines I stick with the slowest speed, and it's REALLY slow. The next one up just seems a little bit too much faster than I am ready for. I have not seen what the third speed looks like. As for the embroidery, I really have no plans to use this. I even complained to my husband asking why he would buy me a machine with so many options I never intend to use. I tried it out just to see if maybe I would be interested. The letter is smaller than I expected with no way to make it bigger. At least no way I could tell based on instruction. It did come out pretty, and I did end up using my kids initials on their hooded towel I made them, but this is probably the extent is me using it. If it were much larger I maybe would take the time to make all sorts of things. One feature I really like is the button to have the needle go back into place. This may seem like a basic simple feature. But using an old machine that gave me issues, this was a godsend. Oh last but not least! The tray extender thing. Gotta love that. I wanted a different Brother, more basic, but didn't come with the extender, and that piece alone is between $60-$100. Pretty much with all the extra add ons this machine has, the extender was free.

Brothers for me.
I'll never buy anything but a Brother sewing machine going forward. Here I am, about a year ago telling my granddaughter to buy a Brother, stay away from the other big name, that I've never had luck with them working correctly. Jump ahead to this past Christmas season and I was out shopping for a few last minute things and happened across this big name brand, all computerized sewing machine on sell for under $500. I thought that was a great deal after of course goggling all about it. So it was a "Merry Christmas" to me thing. Hated it from the get go but thought I'd give it a chance.... guess what? Still do not like it, the automatic thread cutter works half the time, thread bunches and gathers on the underside of the project and as for self setting the tension, what a joke. Went looking for another Brother and ran across this one. Compared it to other ones and decided let's do this. I did and I'm NOT disappointed. Brothers have not let me down yet. Functional, easy to use, great machines. This is my third time using one. Each time I've added more functions to the machines and I've never been disappointed. One happy sewing lady again.

Great overall machine
I have only had my machine for about a month, but so far everything has been great. It came on time and was packaged nicely. Everything included in the description was in the box so no issue there. I have used it to sew a Christmas stocking and it managed to sew through several layers of cotton fabric and interfacing. The multiple speed options with the stop/start button and a foot peddle is great. I did not have to change the thread tension at all when I started sewing, although If I did need to it would be fairly easy. Changing the different feet was no issue, automatic threading worked well. I wish the power cord was a little longer especially since you should not use an extension cord with this machine. I only have 2 issues with this machine as a whole. Number 1 is the feed dogs. One of the first things I did was drop the feed dogs to make sure it worked. They dropped but when I pushed the lever back to raise them they didn't raise. I immediately panicked. This issue is not mentioned anywhere in the manual but if you search online it is a known problem. To fix it all I had to do was turn the lever to the raised position and sew a few stitches. They popped right back up but this so far has happened every time I lower them. Number 2 is the drawing up the thread section of the manual. You do not need to actually do that on this machine, it does it for you once you start sewing, but this is not explicitly stated in the manual. It does say that if your machine has that feature then you can just start sewing, but it can be a bit confusing to include that section in a manual for a machine that should have it. I think this was partly my fault but I spent a lot of time trying to draw up the lower thread when I didn't even need to. So far all the decorative stitches work well, once you have master continuous speed they come out even. The monogramming is really neat and you can program all the letters you want in a row, the font is small but I didn't buy this machine for that feature in particular. This is a good machine for a beginner sewer and is easy to use. The manual does tell you which stitches are for what, which fabric goes with which stitch, and detailed instructions that will answer most if not all questions.

A Fabulous Value! Worth every Penney with lots of features, stitches, and ease of us.
I've been sewing all my life and always have to have a sewing machine nearby. This machine is just for those times when I visit at my daughter's home, in case I want to whip up a project on a moments notice. Also, I might find a quilt store nearby and that could create an emergency. SO, I searched and searched, reading reviews of inexpensive sewing machines which would be solid, reliable, and have at least a few extra features. I have a top of the line Husqvarna and a Janome at home. I've also had machines which would never quite work right out of the box. A reliable, simple straight stitch was what I was looking for, a machine which isn't too fussy about the tension adjustments. After reading the high ratings, I chose this one, by Brother, always reliable, and I could not be happier. This machine runs smoothly right out of the box and handled super thin fabric and fake fur with lining with ease. I was shocked at how easy it was to thread, how quiet it runs, and how it adapts. I've had machines in the past where I was terrified to adjust the tension because it would make the machine all wonky. This was fine, easier than my Janome even. It is a little on the heavy side, so I would look at the weights before buying one to transport to classes. I wasn't too concerned about weight and didn't even check that so can't speak on it, but I'm pretty weak and I am able to move it from table to table. The stitches are all printed on a guide right there on the front of the machine and all you have to do is put in a number. I have tried quite a few and they work beautifully, not requiring a lot of adjustments. There is even a button for thread cutting. Love that. The one thing this does not have, which is admittedly something NOT required, is an automatically rising pressure foot. So when you get to the end of stitching, you have to manually push up the lever that raises the foot. Now at this fabulous price you wouldn't expect that. just saying. The bobbin winding is simple and easy with a clear bobbin cover so you can see how much you have. To summarize, this is an excellent choice for beginners or more advanced sewers. What a great value!

Amazon makes this machine affordable! Love the step by step DVD, makes learning to function the machine easy!
Just received this a week ago and am so happy I went with this one. I had my eye on 3 Brother brand sewing machines JoAnn's offered online. They seemed similar reviews and capabilities so I was going to go with the cheapest of the 3, until I spotted this one! About the same as the cheapest I was comparing to, but had way more stitches and letter!! How Exciting! And because I have Prime - I knew it would get here WAY faster! I love that this comes with a DVD to show you how to operate it! I had to 'rewind' a few times being a newbie but was able to figure it out my first try! Loading bobbins, loading the top thread, and the machine even comes with a needle threading assistance device! The DVD also went over basic stitches and how the computerized machine tells you what presser foot to put in based on the stitch you enter in! I don't even need to use the foot pressor because it has a speed option on the machine, and start/stop, reverse, needle up/down buttons too! The speed 1 is very slow, 2 is pretty fast, but about 2/3s in-between there is a slightly faster speed I use when I'm not using the slowest. The machine has a little compartment in it where you will find the other presser feet and the machine comes with 4 bobbins. When stocking up no sewing notions at the store, the clerk did advise me to always stick with brother bobbins as the machines can be particular about this. (so you won't be sharing bobbins with someone that doesn't have a brother) Overall I'm excited about my purchase, I can't wait to continue playing with it! I even said to my mom "I feel so grown up, I mean - I know I currently own my second house and thats a bigger deal, but owning my own sewing machine makes me feel grown up!"

I'm on Team Brother Now!
I've been using my Brother HC1859 sewing machine about a month now to sew sheer curtains and recently some heavy duty Phifertex Fabric for sling chairs, and it has worked like a champ, I was impressed, as this material really should be sewn on a more industrial heavy-duty machine. I had very few issues along the way, only once had the horrid "birds nest" (just had to re-thread the top, change the bobbin and needle). It replaced my 20-year old Singer machine that I could not get to work properly, despite only having used it very infrequently. I am on team Brother now. I love the bobbin setup - so easy! It was one of the reasons I went with a Brother Sewing machine. Pros: Bobbin setup is super easy, I also love the ability to press a button or use the foot pedal. Extensive amount of stitches. The extension table comes in handy. Even though it's not a heavy duty machine, it worked great on the Phifertex sling material. Cons: The little tool drawer could have been designed better - you have to keep items in a pouch in the pull-out drawer or they could fall out. A drawer that just pulls outward to open would be much better. The rounded key for the screws work, but it's difficult to keep a grip on it in order to turn it in the screw - I've already ordered another screwdriver made for sewing machines. The legs on the extension table constantly need to be re-adjusted/ pushed back in place while sewing as they tend to buckle in. Overall, this is a nice little sewing machine for basic all-round sewing needs, I would absolutely recommend!

Yes, yes and yes to this machine for a starter computerized sewing machine.
I can't say enough good things about my new sewing machine, I absolutely love it!. This was my first computerized machine and I had been looking at more expensive ones but this one was a great price and gets consistently good reviews both here and in videos. It's easy to use, easy to set up (there are all kinds of videos on this machine). It's lightweight and although I wouldn't say it's heavy duty, it's fast and quiet. Right now I am just sewing face masks and it has significantly sped up my production. This machine is also intended to help me get started in quilting and you can't beat the price for the great accessories and the extension table that are included. If I could give it six stars for value for money, I would! Update: It’s now late 2025 and I still have this machine. I sewed close to 3000 face masks during the pandemic, and many towel products. I still love this machine!

Excelente compra
