Did anybody else find this didnt work?

I find they work well, for me the key was rough drying my hair and making sure my hair wasnt too smooth before styling and the curls held much better. I also use the highest heat setting

Does the clamp heat up on the outside?

the whole clamp part heats up but the clip is plastic so does not heat up

Which heat setting is best for fine hair?

I think is better is you try the lower temperatures first. I've got very thick hair and my hairdresser told me that the maximum safe temperature is 210. Higher temperatures damage the hair. I would think that thin hair is more docile? I don't really know. The best best like in everything is trial and error. Good luck!
