Runel Sambal Badjak (Gebakken Hete Sambal/fried Hot Chilli Paste) Red Pepper Paste with Onion 16 Oz in a Box

I was excited about the quantity and price-point for this sambal badjak, but for me the taste was disappointing: it has the usual complement of ingredients (chillies, onion, shrimp), but the end taste is one-dimensional, like a chilies-only Chinese chili-oil. In fact, Chinese chili-oils are often more complex in taste. I "forced" myself to work through 1/5 of the jar, then simply put it away; unfortunately I'll likely end up throwing away the remainder.By contrast, I since ordered -- and finished -- Coimex sambal badjak, which I find delicious, with a "rounder" taste with fewer "jagged edges". Perhaps this has only to do with my own preferences (e.g I don't care for the liquid vinegar-y-ness of sambal oelek), but for myself had I come across this as my first exposure to sambal badjak chances are I would've been forever turned off badjak.EDIT: it's 6 months since my earlier review, I *didn't* throw out the jar, started on it again for having finished the other sambals in the fridge ... and now the taste has grown on me: dunno whether it's due to having sat after being opened, but it tastes more blended and less harsh, and even if my first preference is for the rounder taste of the Conimex offering, this is still a very capable badjak: good fire, appreciable flavor. I've been educated, and am changing rating from 2 stars to 4.

Not the best tasting sambal -- pretty pungent harsh flavor. Not a pleasant savory taste like I've had before with sambals.

I hope the secret never gets out how amazing this stuff is. Once you start trying it you'll start putting it on everything. Even my 10 year old is now hooked and asks me for more. I guess we might be looking for a deal for Christmas.

CONTAINS WHEAT FLOUR!I bought this item. I need to be gluten-free and the Amazon images do NOT show the ingredient list. When delivered, I read the ingredients and it clearly shows "WHEAT FLOUR".I love Sambal Badjak - but I can't eat this. It would have been nice if the ingredient list had been displayed so that I could have known this before buying.

Another fine sambal. The belacan is tasty and strong. A bit sweet but the spice is in there too. I like the Konimex a bit better, but you get more for your buck with Runel. Good straight up as a condiment, great when cooking.

Grew up on this incredible chili, LOVE it and so happy I can get it on Amazon, as it is VERY difficult to find. Amazing flavor and amazing heat! Love it!

The product I received had rotten. This is extremely liquidy and not an actual paste.

True and real Dutch Sambal - wonderful that I have a new source as the local store in Portland closed its doors a few months back.
