Hi, this antenna can not work alone. It must connect to router, AP or wireless adapter or other 2.4ghz wireless device as sending/receiving tool. If your use a external wireless adapter which has RP SMA FEMALE connector.on the chromebook. Then you can connect this antenna and pointing to the hotspots direction to extend range of reception.

What is a suggested compatible router/receiver for this antenna?

Hi, This antenna can compatible with most of the router and receiver as well as they are using 2.4GHz frequency, just make sure the connector type can match each other. This antenna connector type is rp-sma male (with a pin inside), and most of the connector on router is sma female (without pin inside). If your router/receiver connector is not a sma female,you will need a convertor cable to connect between them. More over, if you want to set the antenna far away from the router, a extension cable is a good option.You can find all these cable in our store. Thank you.

Can this be lighty painted without affecting performance?

So long as there is no metallic stuff in the paint, I think you'll be OK. I have mine painted black and it works quite well.
